ELA
Mrs. Boyd
This Week
As you all know, it has been a while since the last ELA update- my apologies. With the exception of all the sickness that has been running its villainous course, January has been a great month, and these sixth-grade students are working so diligently. They are such a fun group to be around!
This week in ELA, students are taking a test Monday and Tuesday. They did not need to study for the test; it is in STAAR format and will count as a daily grade. Students will STAAR test in May on a Monday (math) and Tuesday (reading). We are not benchmarking until April. Thus said, we are doing a big test this week, and will do another in March just to get an idea of what we need to work on. We are also trying to mirror what taking a test at the beginning of the week looks and feels like.
After our testing, we will begin reading our class novel, Tuck Everlasting. This will take up most of our time in February, since there are many events happening, including Camp Grady Spruce. Tuck Everlasting appeals to all students in some way and is a great way to weave, connect, and apply everything we have learned about fiction.
This semester, students will become more independent when it comes to texts that we read as a class. Throughout the first semester, we read most everything together, stopping and discussing along the way. We will still do that, but for the most part, students will take the reigns and read independently, as they foster thinking based on what was modeled the first semester, while responding to texts individually and in-depth.
