#OneKirkwoodOneMinute Family Challenge 2020 for our Elementary Families
Missing Field Day? Our elementary physical education teachers have come up with some fun and creative ways to get the whole family moving! Be on the lookout for a one-minute family challenge sent via Schoology from your child's physical education teacher. The goal of this is to promote health, wellbeing, and physical activity for all our families. Share a photo of how your family is meeeting the challenge on our District facebook page on Monday. Or, you can tweet @kwoodschools and use #OneKirkwoodOneMinute.
KSD Art Project Visual Celebration
We want to acknowledge all the strength and optimism our students, families, and community have put into these last two months of online learning. Please consider submitting a photo of your child's artwork that celebrates their hard work to our google folder. This could be from a previous week or create a new sign or image celebrating the strength and kindness of our Kirkwood Community. All photos will be gathered into a #OneKirkwood district slideshow to share across all schools the last week of school. Please check your child’s Schoology account from their art teacher for more information.
Devices
Given potential health concerns and the unusual circumstances of our spring, we have decided to not collect student iPads and laptops this summer, with a few exceptions. While most devices in our district move with students on a year-to-year basis, this is not the case for graduating seniors or our current eighth graders - who’ll switch from iPads to laptops for high school. Our technology team can update other student devices remotely using FileWave, our mobile device manager (MDM). For additional information about summer technology plans, view our website.
Summer School Information
We know many families are thinking toward summer and wondering what next year may look like in schools. We also know many camps are closed, leaving families looking for safe options to keep children engaged over the summer months. In response to these changing needs and concerns, we have expanded summer programming to offer ALL students the option to engage in high quality online learning.
There are three programming options for summer, each taking advantage of district-issued technology.
Kirkwood will continue to offer limited options at the elementary, middle, and high school level, providing identified students with targeted supports.
Extended School Year will be offered virtually to qualifying students through Special School District
New this year: All Kirkwood students can also enroll in enrichment, extension, and/or credit enhancement courses for their rising grade level through LAUNCH, a virtual course access provider based in Springfield Public Schools. We are excited to offer this opportunity to our students, at no cost to families or our district.
You will be notified by your school if your child qualifies for Kirkwood or SSD programming.
We encourage all families to review summer school information on our website at http://kirkwoodschools.org/summerschool2020.
Families interested in LAUNCH can find information on our website and on the LAUNCH website. Please note that families interested in LAUNCH programming will register directly with Springfield Public Schools at http://sps.org/explore.
Kindergarten Registration
Enrollment continues to grow in the Kirkwood School District, which is why it is important to register early for all grades. Enrolling early allows time for schools to plan class schedules and placement of classrooms to maintain desired class size guidelines. Children need to be 5 years old by August 1, 2020, to attend kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year.
Please review our Student Registration Checklist on the website for important documents prior to starting the online enrollment process. If you have questions, please visit the Frequently Asked Questions page.
Summer Support for Meals
***Starting on Wednesday, May 27, Grab & Go summer meals will switch to Monday and Wednesday pickups, from 11a-1p at Nipher. The following Monday, June 1, will be the next pick up, and then again Wednesday, June 3. This will continue on this Monday & Wednesday pick up schedule until school starts in the fall. Two days of meals will be in the Monday pick up. Three days of meals will be in the Wednesday pick up.
In addition to our Grab & Go program, our KSD Nutrition on the Weekends (NOW) program is expanding this summer to support families in need with weekend meal support. KSD NOW Response to Summer Support will provide families with a box of food once a month:
Wednesday, June 3
Wednesday, July 8
Wednesday, August 5.
The box of food will be delivered to their home on these dates. Someone will be in touch with families on estimated arrival time on those dates. Families will also receive information on how to apply for KSD NOW for the upcoming 20-21 school year.
Please reach out to your school principal, school counselor, social worker, or classroom teacher or go to the website kirkwoodschools.org/cares to sign up. This is supported financially by donations from KSD NOW.
If you are a family who needs any type of summer food support, please fill out kirkwoodschools.org/cares.
If you would like to donate to KSD NOW, please visit our online giving campaign.
