CONGRATULATIONS!
El Marino Elementary is being recognized as a 2023 California Distinguished School. This is an exceptional achievement.
The California Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools for their excellent work in one of two categories: closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST
Hello El Marino Parents!
Here is a little bit about your School Psychologist…
I am a CCUSD alumni, I attended Farragut Elementary School for a few years before leaving for the valley. Returning here to work as a school psychologist is like returning to my original home. El Marino is such a unique and wonderful learning environment, I consider myself very fortunate to be part of the community. I received my degrees at UCLA & CSUN. I worked as a teacher for LAUSD then transitioned to being a school psychologist at Saugus USD for 19 years. My family recently moved to the South Bay which prompted me to seek employment closer to home. I have a son at USC dental school and a daughter at Claremont McKenna college. When I’m not working, I love to walk my dog (a 5 lb. maltipoo who likes to be carried while I walk) and bake.
Please feel free to reach out to me via email (hollysong@ccusd.org).
You may also reach me at El Marino at 310-842-4241 x6249.
I look forward to working with you and your children this school year!

REMINDER!! 5th GRADE COVER CONTEST DUE DATE: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd
Instructions
1. This year’s theme title is: “Be a Rainbow in Someone Else’s Cloud.” -Maya Angelou
Because the theme is a quote you have to include the author’s name “Maya Angelou”
A Dolphin (our school mascot) is optional. So be creative!
2. The cover art must include the following words, “El Marino Language
School Yearbook” and “2022-2023” as part of the design. And, the title, “Be a Rainbow in Someone Else’s Cloud.” Maya Angelou
3. Please do not put your name on the cover. Instead, write your
name, teacher’s name, and room # on the back of the artwork.
4. Size: 8.5”x11” and must be in color! (paint, markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc) We aren't accepting digital art. It has to be done by hand.

of the school by the end of the day. Any work that comes in after the
due date will not be accepted. Winners* will be announced via

A MESSAGE FROM OUR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE (ESC)
CCUSD ESC JANUARY REPORT
Our Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC) is a group of parents, students and school officials who collaborate to improve our environment and schools. We are fortunate to have Superintendent Quoc Tran, CCUSD Board members Stephanie Loreto & Kelly Kent and other District leaders as committee members.
At our last meeting, on January 12, we discussed Earth Fest 2023, which will be on April 22, 2023 at El Rincon Elementary. All Elementary schools are encouraged to participate in this free event and sponsor one activity/booth which will contribute to the event. Some ideas include, hosting a Buy Nothing Bazaar, Running The Event Bike Valet, Organizing a Gardening booth. We are open to hear your ideas! We want to make sure that your school is included in this important day and that your students and families really feel welcome. Earth Fest was a HUGE success last year and the move to make it district-wide with our elementaries schools includes you!
Our Committee also began discussing how to reduce the massive volume of waste we generate through food services. While our District has been moving away from plastics we still put over 4,000 paper trays, spoons, plates and plastic packages into our waste streams every single day. On January 12, we received a presentation from Buoy, a company that creates reusable plastic food service items from recycled ocean-bound plastic. We will continue to explore whether this is a workable system for our District.
To attend the next sustainability meeting or for more information about the above issues, please email emlsgreencommittee@gmail.com.

JOGATHON INFORMATION!
EL MARINO PTA JOGATHON FUNDRAISER IS TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7th!
Thank you so much for supporting El Marino PTA every day!!
El Marino PTA has been planning our biggest fundraiser of the year!! Thanks to all the donations received last year we are working on updating our audiovisual equipment in the auditorium before the end of this year!
Jogathon is El Marino PTA’s largest fundraiser. We will be having this fundraiser during students' respective PE time throughout the day on Tuesday, February 7th. Although this isn't an open event, PTA will provide volunteer opportunities (look for this volunteer signup next week).
In addition to supporting classroom enrichment funds, assemblies, field trips, and much more, the MAIN GOAL of this year’s Jogathon is to update technology in the classrooms to enhance the learning experiences of the students.
You should have received an email from 99 pledges with your student's information about how to donate, pledge and share with family and friends. The general pledges website is jogathon.elmarinopta.org.
Any donation/pledge is welcomed!
Due to the increase in printing costs, Jogathon bifold forms will be available at the school front office only instead of provided in each student's backpack. If you prefer a paper form for Jogathon, these will be provided at the front office in English, Spanish, and Japanese. Please return to the teacher before or on the day of the Jogathon.
All CLASSES to hit 100% participation will win a Bubble Pop (Popsicle and Popcorn) Party and the GRADE level that gets the highest participation overall will win a grade-wide Popcorn Party!!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
GO DOLPHINS!
If you can't find or don't receive your student(s) 99 pledges information in your email inbox by Monday, Jan. 23rd, or have any general Jogathon questions, please email Sonia Malhotra at sonia@elmarinopta.org or Zoila Moreira at zoila@elmarinopta.org.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
El Marino PTA wants to say a very Happy Lunar New Year to all our families celebrating The Year of the Rabbit! This is a worldwide celebration as Asian countries and the Asian diaspora celebrate across the globe. We are very grateful that our El Marino Japanese Cultural Heritage Committee (JCHC) worked really hard to create a beautiful Oshôgatsu display in the cafetorium hallway for the students to view and learn more about the Japanese New Year traditions.
El Marino PTA will be sponsoring an assembly to share a little bit about Lunar New Year with traditional music and a Lion Dance on January 18. We hope the students enjoy this festive tradition!
