How are global forests related to the gases in our atmosphere?

  • Living trees remove CO2, decomposing trees add CO2 to the atmosphere
  • Does not change the net atmospheric carbon
  • Deforestation... net destruction of vegetation will contribute to the increase in atmospheric CO2
  • Mass of carbon in the trees is added to atmosphere through combustion/decomposition
  • Greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide

How are forests changing as a result of global climate change?

What challenges do these changes present to wildlife and human populations?

What steps are being taken, or suggested, to help support wildlife during these changes?
