Grades 5 and up
Do you like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Nate the Great series? Jake the Fake Keeps it Real, written by Craig Robinson and Adam Mansbach, with art by Malden born cartoonist Keith Knight is a funny story of an 11 year old boy who is admitted to the exclusive Arts and Music Academy. Jake’s problem? He is an amazing cartoonist but isn’t a very good student and knows very little about music. In this hysterical story, Jake must figure out how to survive life in his new school when he doesn’t have a clue on what to do, especially with the big talent show coming up. Jake the Fake is available from the Malden Public Library as both a print and ebook. Copies will also be available in all five K-8 Malden Public School libraries when safe circulation resumes at some point in the future. Click here to see a funny “interview” by Jake with the book’s author Craig Robinson.Children of Blood and Bone
High School/Young Adult
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

Louise Stokes, Track and Field Athlete
Louise Stokes, born in Malden in 1913 was a track and field athlete. She was known as "The Malden Meteror" for her incredible track records. She originally played basketball while in junior high, but her teammates encouraged her to ran track at Malden High School. Louise was invited to play in both the 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games where she was considered to be the first African-American woman to qualify for an Olympic team, but sadly, did not have a chance to play due to her race and the prejudices against her. She created the "Colored Women's Bowling League" where she won many awards as a bowler and continued in athletics until she died in 1978. The Malden River Loop is dedicated to Louise Stokes.
