FROM SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION
As part of our commitment to building belonging for all students and members of our LES community, we continue to expand our understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our staff members engage in professional learning focusing on recognizing opportunities to celebrate our diverse community, examining opportunity gaps, and finding ways to decrease barriers to success and well-being. We believe that our students deserve to see their experiences reflected in stories and literature and that children also benefit from having windows into someone else’s experiences. Multicultural education scholar, Rudine Sims Bishop, developed the phrase, windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors, to explain how children see themselves in books.
“Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created and recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books.”
Our media specialist, Mrs. Stephanie Hastings works very hard each year to add to our diverse collection of children’s books in our school library. These books are available for students to check out and for teachers to read with and discuss with their students. We are very fortunate to have a library that reflects our amazing community.

NEW INFORMATION
Picture Day- March 7th
Calling all walkers…And runners, skippers, hoppers, and twirlers!!!
Walking Wednesday…
Is well on its way! Here’s what you need to know!
Walking Wednesday is an OPTIONAL program offered to ALL students
MOST Wednesdays during their recess break (September-December and March-June)
Students EARN a necklace and foot charm for each mile walked
(This year so far, about 400 students have walked a combined 1250 miles…WOW!)
Students may walk as little or as much as they like, as often as they wish.
This program is about getting students moving, making achievable goals, and teamwork.
The more miles walked, the more charms earned, including special mileage charms.
Students also earn rewards and prizes for reaching individual, grade and school milestones!
Students are responsible for bringing their necklace each week.
If a necklace is left at home, walkers have the option to “earn now and collect later”.
We encourage students to keep their necklace in their backpack unless it’s on their neck.
Lost necklaces (and charms earned this year only) can be earned back by walking
1 lap (1/5 of a mile) for each item they wish to replace.
If this becomes habit, only necklaces will be able to be earned back.
The kids work very hard…Help us encourage them by asking to see their necklace!
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the program, feel free to contact
Natalie Crum @ bwiflygirl@gmail.com

February 21, 2022 - Discretionary Absence Approval
We recognize that many families had planned trips prior to the Board of Education's decision to use President's Day, Monday, February 21, 2022, as a make-up day. If that is the case, please complete an Absence Request form and submit that to LESAbsence@hcpss.org or email Mrs. Drews at linda_drews@hcpss.org for approval. This will help us process those absences prior to February 21.

Black History Month
Throughout each year we celebrate the diversity of all of our students at Lisbon. In February, we focus on Black History Month and highlight the important contributions of Black and African Americans who have helped shape our country and contributed to our society.
Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States. It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today. This newsletter has resources that can be utilized in the classroom or at home to celebrate Black History Month. Throughout the month of February, Lisbon Elementary School will recognize Black History Month and highlight the many accomplishments of African Americans.
There are a number of resources our teachers use throughout the school year and in February. We also want to share read-aloud books for kids from Netflix Jr. Many of these books can be found in our library and the Howard County Public Library.
