In the hustle and bustle of everyday life (especially a school administrator's!), we sometimes forget to take a step back and look at the wonderful world around us. Mr. Cohen, Ms. Johnson, and I did just that earlier this week as we chatted about the amazing students we have here at Riviera. Each day that passes just affirms what I felt the first day I met our students as assistant principal in August of 2009 -- that our students are some of the most loving, warm, accepting, welcoming, understanding, compassionate, humble, and selfless students I've ever come across. We often talk about the outstanding, rigorous academic program we have here, but equally important is how we develop our students emotionally and socially. We never miss an opportunity to recognize and thank students when we see they've done something to help another child; when we see them invite the new student to sit at their lunch table; when they lend a pencil to their friend who left her supplies at home; or when they help a student carry his bookbag to class because he broke his arm. Our students do these things not for the praise they receive from us, the adults, but because they know it's the right thing to do, and they understand that it is through caring for each other that Riviera will continue to be the second home they have come to know and love. So this Thanksgiving, I am eternally grateful for what each student at Riviera has taught me over these 12 years. While my job may be to teach them to be stellar students, they have taught me to be a better human being. I think I got the better end of the deal :)
Have a lovely Thanksgiving, and you can expect the next installment of Friday at 4:00 in TWO weeks!
Sincerely grateful,
Dr. Rodriguez

Community Helpers . . . the name says it all! Ms. Torres, one of our spectacular Spanish teachers, taught our four-year-olds about the importance of community helpers -- teachers, police officers, firefighters, teachers, and nurses. The students learned about those careers and the roles those community helpers play in our lives. And there is no better time of the year than Thanksgiving to recognize our community helpers for their hard work and contributions to society. Thank you, Ms. Torres, for all you do for our students! And thank you, community helpers, for making our world a better place!
