News and Notes from Oliver W. Winch MS - 5.4.15

May is here!

As I got to school last Friday, I flipped the page on the calendar in my office and noticed that it's May already. It's hard to believe that my first full school year as principal at OWWMS is winding down. I've really enjoyed learning about this wonderful middle school community alongside your children this year. With May and its warm, sunny days (hopefully!) comes the proverbial countdown to summer. As staff we think of this in another way. Instead of a countdown of days, we will be encouraging the students to make the rest of our days together count. I'll continue to share our learning on Twitter (@mrdawkinssgf) so you can see the great things that our staff are doing for and with students.

Teacher Appreciation Week

This week (May 4 - 8) is National Teacher Appreciation Week across the country. Communities are taking a moment to reflect on the good work that teachers do everyday and thank them appropriately. I am very proud to work with an outstanding faculty at OWWMS who have made my transition during this first year smooth and have always made me feel welcome. They are a positive, student-centered group of professionals who always put your children first. Please take a moment, if you have a chance, to thank a teacher this week! 8th Grade t-shirts are here!

A big Bulldog thank you to 8th grade student Serena Morehouse (pictured above) for designing this year's class t-shirt. All 8th graders received their t-shirts in homeroom last Friday, and they look great!

The Class of 2019: Lookin' good!

Eighth grade t-shirts being distributed gives me an excuse to stand on the roof with a camera. Can you believe that this will be the last high school class to graduate in the twenty-tens?!

OWWMS Text Messaging Information Service is a convenient service that allows individuals or organizations the opportunity to send out to the community cell phone text message updates containing important communication and information about events. Please consider signing up for text updates from OWWMS. We have 75 parent/guardian members right now, and the hope is that it will continue to grow. Follow this link to learn how to sign up for this free service using your cell phone or email. It is one more easy, quick way for us to stay in touch over the course of a school year.

Home-School Association

At the beginning of the school year I heard from a number of parents who talked about wanting to remain as connected to their child's middle school experience as they were at the elementary level. While certainly transitioning your children to the middle school involves helping them work toward self advocacy and independence, we always welcome parent involvement. Our Home-School Association is a great way for you to be connected to all of the happenings at OWWMS. Our next HSA meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 18th, at 6:30 PM in the library media center. Please consider putting this meeting on your calendar and joining me and our dedicated HSA officers. Meetings are held one Monday per month. I hope to see you there!
