Maria Martinez
1887-1980
Personal Info
- Native American from New Mexico
- Her husband's name was Julian
- Maria learned pottery skills from her aunt
Trial and Error
Maria was not always great at decorating her pots. But after much practice, she finally mastered the designs we see in so much of her pottery.
Maria was embarrassed at one point in her life because she could not create the black pots as the Pueblo people did, so she hid her work from the world. But one day, some visitors purchased a pot similar to hers and she gained confidence. Because of this she began making pots like that again and got lots of attention for it.
Perfect
This plate is basically perfectly round! I really like the design she put around the edge of this plate.
Design
I LOVE the design she has on the top of this bowl! It is absolutely beautiful!
Combination
I love the way she combines the shiny glaze with the matte glaze. I also like the little creature she has on it.
My Opinion...
I enjoy Maria's work. It has a very Native American look to it, which makes sense considering Maria was a Native American. I really enjoy the sleek and shiny appearance of her glaze, and the way she pairs it with a matte glaze. All of her work is so perfect, i tried to find flaws in it but i couldn't. She was an extremely talented artist.
