What's Going On In The World Of Shepherd Middle

Welcome to this Page!

Spring is upon us and behaviors will change in and out of school. I want us to focus on what we can do to assist students on how to be the best Social Emotional Learner we can be!

A recent article in Education Week discusses the importance of "human literacy," or the ability to understand and apply important social-emotional skills to oneself and to others. The five factors of human literacy are as follows: empathy, self- control, integrity, embracing diversity, and grit.

Students should have the opportunity to examine and discuss these factors often, such as discussing how a literary character acts with integrity (or not). Educators should also be clear how these skills are important in life so students see the benefit of building them. For instance, students may create workplace or social scenarios in which these skills would come in handy, or come up with scenarios in which failure to apply these skills would create a bad situation.
