The First 3 Days!
August 31st - September 2nd
First Three Days
Responsive Classroom Goingson
Morning Meetings have started in all three homerooms. Students are greeting each other in various ways, and learning some whole-group activities to start to build trust and community. Some of these activities include: Would You Rather, Elevens, and many more!
In addition to morning meeting, students have participated in many interactive modeling sessions. This is a powerful strategy to get everyone in the group the same collective understanding of how to do something, or use a common material or space.
Classroom libraries are one such area that has been modeled. We have also modeled routines such as signing out to go to the bathroom and pack/unpack materials. Having clear expectations for these routines helps our classrooms run smoothly.

Arrival/Dismissal
Thank you to everyone who has filled out the dismissal survey that was sent by the office. If you have not filled it out yet, we will resend it to you so we know how your child should be getting home each day.
We also wanted to clarify the difference between students being a pick up and students being walkers at the end of the day. If a student is a pick up, teachers must put eyes on the adult picking up before students leave their supervision. If students are walkers, they may walk to the agreed upon place without teachers supervising them. Please let us know if you have any question about the difference between the two!

Read Aloud
We are reading Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key by Jack Gantos. This is the story of Joey Pigza who struggles with ADHD. Joey has been raised by his grandmother until recently when his mother returned. Joey is the narrator of this story so we hear about his struggles in his own voice. The teachers at Joey's school really aren't helping him manage his behavior and instead give him jobs to keep him busy. He has a heart of gold but just struggles to control himself and make good decisions. His teacher, Mrs. Maxy, gave him a box pf pencils to sharpen because he couldn't sit still. He started sharpening pencils and then sharpened chalk to make fangs. Joey then moved onto popsicle sticks and was unsuccessful. Unfortunately he tried to sharpen his fingernails which resulted in a minor injury.

We are reading Book Scavenger by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman. The game Book Scavenger involves players hiding and finding books using Codes. It was created by Garrison Griswold who is about to launch a new game when he is attacked in a subway station. Emily Crane and her family are moving to San Francisco, home of Emily's Idol- Garrison Griswold. Emily and her family move frequently as her family has set a goal of living in all 50 states. While Emily enjoys being in new places, she is starting to realize she is missing out on making lasting friendships. Emily is an avid Book Scavenger player and we are sure her storyline and Garrison Griswold's will cross as we read more!
