NEW: A Message from Mr. Smith
Happy Halloween! As we close out October, so are we seeing leaves fall, temperature changes and the end of marking period 1! This Wednesday, November 3 closes our the first quarter. On Thursday, November 4, there will be no school for students so that teachers are able to finalize and process grades.
In this week's newsletter, you will see information regarding a new tardy policy, an opportunity to donate canned foods, honor society tutoring, parent/teacher conference information, an important note about AP exams, this week's College and Career information and much more!
Thank you all for your continued support. Let's make it a great week!
NEW: Tardy Policy
Recently, there have been a growing number of students who are arriving late to class. In order to mitigate this, beginning November 5th, 2021, the administrative team will work with the security team to address the number of students who continuously arrive to class late and without an excused pass. Staff members will submit student's names who have accumulated 3 or more unexcused tardies.
- At the first unexcused tardy, the teacher will talk to the student.
- At the second unexcused tardy, the teacher will call the parent.
- At the third unexcused tardy, the teacher will submit names for an administrative lunch detention to be assigned.
We appreciate everyone's support of stressing the importance of being on time to class. All parts of a class period are vital to a student's academic success.

NEW: Advanced Placement Exams
Northwest High School is proud to offer 26 different AP courses. AP courses offer a rigorous curriculum that challenges students to think critically and refine their reading, writing, and study skills. These skills prepare students for a variety of post-secondary opportunities after graduating from high school. In particular, colleges and universities are looking for students who have challenged themselves and are ready for the rigors of college; thirty-one percent of colleges and universities look for AP experience when awarding scholarships.
At the end of each AP course, students have a national AP exam in May. This year all exams will be given in person at Northwest High School. Taking these exams is excellent preparation for large cumulative assessments in college, and students can earn college credit and/or advanced standing in college based on their performance. AP exam scores are released by the College Board in July, and it is important to note that AP exam scores are not included in the calculation of a student's course grade. AP course teachers provide extensive AP exam preparation and support for students throughout the year. For more information about specific AP courses and exams, please visit the College Board's AP Central website at
https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap?excmpid=mtg434-pr-1-vid.
All students enrolled in an AP course are expected to take the corresponding AP exam. An exam will be ordered for all students who enroll in the respective AP classroom. The cost of the exam is $96. Fee reductions are available for students who qualify. Please note that all exams must be paid in full by Friday, March 25th. Payment information will be available at the beginning of December.
At Northwest High School, we ensure that the cost of an AP exam is never a barrier that prevents students from taking AP exam(s). Please contact one of our school AP exam coordinators. Ms. Mason (amy_m_mason@mcpsmd.org) or Ms. Myers (autumn_k_myers@mcpsmd.org) to discuss fee reduction options.

REMINDER: Late Arrivals and Sign-in/Sign-Out Procedures
We know that things happen, kids oversleep, need to go to doctors and dentists, etc. However, recently we have had a steady stream of students arriving at school late, not just by a few minutes but until mid-morning. Not only do those students miss instruction, but it is also disruptive to everyone else in the classroom (especially the teacher) when they enter late. Therefore, we would like to ask you to do your best to make sure that your children get to school on time. We most definitely understand the struggle and appreciate your efforts!
Additionally, we want to ascertain that you and your child(ren) realize that it is imperative that they sign in and out at the attendance office when they arrive late or have to leave school early. While it may not seem like a big deal when students skip this step, we absolutely have to be able to account for everyone in the building at all times. In case of an emergency, we might not be looking for your child in the building if he or she signed out early but didn’t sign back in upon return, because as far as we know, they left school. If students don’t comply with this rule their absence will not be excused, even if they bring in a note.
As long as we have written permission (email to Ulrike_robinson@mcpsmd.org or note, no phone calls) from you ahead of time to dismiss your child early, they are able to sign themselves out. If students don’t feel well they should report to the health room and can be dismissed from there.
Hopefully this will clarify some of the procedures. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Robinson in the attendance office.

All donations can be dropped off to the Media Center by 11/22/21. All donations from the sleep out and the Move-In-Kit challenge are used in Montgomery County.

REMINDER: Student Rights and Responsibilities/Code of Conduct
In order to ensure a safe, productive, and positive learning environment, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) publishes two documents that help students, parents, and staff and understand school rules and regulations; the expectations for student conduct; and the possible consequences for violating the rules.
A Student’s Guide to Rights and Responsibilities is an overview of the rights and responsibilities students enjoy in MCPS and a summary of the laws and regulations that affect students.
The MCPS Student Code of Conduct provides an overview of discipline procedures and protocols and the range of consequences students could face for violating various policies, regulations, and rules. The guide also discusses the MCPS philosophy to discipline and defines the various disciplinary responses.
All MCPS families have access to these documents in print or digital/printable PDF format. Parents and guardians are encouraged to review this document with children so that our students understand their rights and responsibilities and the district’s expectations for student conduct. If you have questions, please speak to a Northwest administrator.
Please click here for additional information and to access digital, printable copies of each document: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/students/rights/ If you would like a printed copy of the guides, stop by the main office to request a copy.
REMINDER: Holiday Giving Project of Montgomery County
Each year the Holiday Giving Project of Montgomery County provides food at Thanksgiving and food and gifts for the December holidays to low-income families. The Holiday Giving Project Coalition coordinates this seasonal program in conjunction with a variety of religious, business and nonprofit organizations. Families can be referred by School Counselors. All Northwest students will receive a paper copy of the 2021 Holiday Giving Form to bring home this week in their 3rd period class. If you are interested in receiving these services, completed forms should be submitted to the Northwest Counseling Office by Friday, October 22, 2021 to meet the Thanksgiving deadline. While a referral is not a guarantee of assistance, the Project helps as many families in need as donations allow. Please contact your student’s School Counselor if you have any questions.
