MACS Micro-School

August-September 2021

Our Partnership- We Are in This Together!

We are entering Week 2! I am extremely grateful for all of our Micro-School students and already have a special place in my heart for each of them. This week we learned in the real world by digging in lots of dirt. These kids are such hard workers and showed great character as we worked towards common goals. I have reminded our class that we are like a family, we take care of each other and we will support each other as we all work to grow, just like those plants.

Please follow our new Micro-School work by following #MACSmicro on our Mount Airy City Schools Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Week 2- Schedule

Seesaw Student Assignments & Family Support

Students will begin having assignments in Seesaw on Monday, August 30 at 8:00 am. Please support your child's virtual learning by making sure they are working on Seesaw everyday. Even on the days I Google Meet with them, they will still have Seesaw assignments to complete.

  • Seesaw assignments will pop up in their account at different times to help them stay engaged throughout the Micro-School day. This will also help them not feel overwhelmed because they will be accomplishing many tasks throughout the day.
  • Their engagement in Seesaw ensures they are working and learning, which also provides me the ability to count them present for school attendance.
  • School attendance for each day is based on 3 factors- they must be engaging in one of these forms of Micro-School: (1) independent Seesaw assignments, (2) working on Google Meet with Ms. Willard, or (3) attending a place- based lesson somewhere in the community with Ms. Willard

What If My Child Gets Logged Out of Seesaw on Their iPad??

Using the log-in with gmail access and use their student email. I will send these to you privately. There are two options for password for all student emails, if one does not work, then try the other one.

Learning Goals

We have a lot of learning to cover this year and we must work together to stay on track.

For Week 1 I have the following goals for all students:

  • Become comfortable using their iPad for learning
  • Understand how to access Google Meet for our learning times with me
  • Understand how to access and use Seesaw for all lessons and assignments

As always, my other goals for our students:

  • To feel safe, cared for, included, and capable of reaching their personal potential!
  • To know they have me to help them grow this year
  • To feel empowered as learners, problem solvers, creators and designers; these kids are AMAZING!
  • To work towards grade-level standards and skills that will help ensure they are ready for the next school year!

Coming Soon- Tuesday & Wednesday- September 7 & 8- Beginning Of Grade (BOG) Test for 3rd Grade ONLY

All 3rd graders will need to complete the BOG testing in person on Wednesday, September 8 at the Mount Airy City Schools Community Central Office. I will be giving them this assessment in our classroom from 8:00 am to 10:30 am.

On Tuesday, September 7 at 8:00 am I will be having a Google Meet with our 3rd Graders to complete the tutorial for this assessment; this is required for all of us to complete together prior to taking the assessment. We will only meet from 8:00 am to 8:30 am.

Place-Based Learning- Swimming at Reeves Community Center

Date: Friday, September 3 from 12:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Location: Reeves Community Center- Meet at the tunnel parking lot entrance- turning in from Pine Street

Pickup will be at the same place- we will wait at the end of the tunnel for families- please arrive by 2:40 pm.

Families are invited to join us but not required. This event will help us engage in physical fitness in the form of swimming. While there, Cathy Cloukey, Assistant Director will complete a swim assessment for each child. I would highly recommend Reeves Community Center for swim lessons for every child, as this is a life skill they can carry throughout their lives. The RCC Foundation offers scholarships to children that need financial assistance with attending a set of swimming lessons.

For our special day, we have a reservation with Reeves and multiple lifeguards will be on duty for our event. Please make sure your child brings a swimsuit, beach towel, sunscreen, and shoes that may get wet. I will provide snacks for our time there.

I am beginning my 18th year in education and have served as a classroom teacher, school library media specialist, assistant principal, and grant coordinator before moving into my current role.
