State Funding for Education
While education funding is a shared partnership between the state and federal governments and local communities, the bulk of school district funding comes from the state. Unfortunately, state funding has not kept pace with inflation or increasing educational costs and student needs.
If state funding had kept pace with inflation since 2003, Owatonna Public Schools would have received an additional $3 million last school year alone. That gap is projected to increase. In addition, required academic and support programs cost the district nearly $7 million more than it receives each year from the state and federal governments, putting additional pressure on the district’s operating budget.
Owatonna Public Schools has three options to make up these gaps: cut costs, increase revenue or both. The School Board will be reviewing options over the next few months to determine how best to proceed.
