Live Webinar with Dr. Kathy Howery
The Lived Experience of Speaking Through a Device
February 14, 2018 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. PST
Dr. Howery presents the findings from her Doctoral research. Her inquiry sought to provide insights that may serve and inform educators, speech language pathologists and others who gather around the field of augmentative and alternative communication, AAC. While the phenomenon at hand, speaking through a speech-generating device, is a decidedly uncommon experience, it is hoped that the understandings gleaned may speak to the decidedly common human experience of human connection through language and speech.
Dr. Howery is an educational consultant. She has also been a sessional lecturer at several Universities in Alberta. Kathy has published in the area of Universal Design for Learning and students with significant intellectual disabilities, and the lived experience of students who use Speech Generating Devices to communicate. In addition, Kathy has co-authored several book chapters focusing on best practices in providing supports and services to students with complex needs. Kathy provides ongoing consultation to several Alberta school jurisdictions. Most recently, Kathy is working with the Provincial Wide Low Incidence Collaborative Supports team.
