This Week's Learning
Everyday Math
FYI: On Fridays, students are also getting the opportunity to play math games designed by Everyday Math. By playing these games, students are refining the skills they have learned from fourth grade.
Science and Social Studies
This week in science, we continued making electrical circuits, learning about conductors and insulators, as well as, completing open circuits. We also took the Forward Exam for both parts of science.
*Ask your child the meaning of conductors and insulators. (conductors allow electrical circuits to work, while insulators prevent them from working)
Social Studies
On Friday, students prepared for the Farm Day field trip by watching a farming video made by the Jefferson County Agricultural society and completing an assessment to show what they learned.
*Ask your child what was one thing they learned from the video?
Literacy
In writing this week, your students have started to create an invention that fills a specific need in our world. Students chose a theme and then created a survey, to identify a problem with their theme. They then went through the steps of inventing and ended up creating an invention. In the next couple of weeks they will work on ways to persuade people to buy their invention.
Students' favorite part so far was conducting a survey. They really enjoyed making their survey on Google Forms and then sending it out to classmates. See the pictures below for Wednesday's fun.
Reader's Workshop
In reading this week, students were exposed to texts about innovation and inspiration. The main goal of the week was to find the main idea and evidence throughout all the passages they looked at.
