Big picture

On Commitment - Rev. Mary Gear

This past Sunday, the service was about what is happening in Unitarian Universalism right now. You can watch the service or read the sermon here.

In the service, we called on our ancestors, explored the history of our faith, and I spoke about proposed revisions to Article II of the UUA Bylaws. This is the section that contains the 7 Principles and 6 Sources of Unitarian Universalism, as well as the Purpose of the Unitarian Universalist Association, and our position on Inclusion and Freedom of Belief.

In Sunday’s service, I spoke about my process of coming to terms with the proposed revisions. I noted that this process used by the Article II Study Commission was broad and inclusive. I shared that the Commission itself was diverse. I shared my feelings of uncertainty, grief, and fear. And I shared my resulting commitment to live my values, to walk my talk. Even though it means letting go of something I hold dear and have history with—the 7 principles and 6 sources.

In the service, I invited you to engage with the proposed revisions and reflect on your own relationship with Unitarian Universalism. Who are you in this faith? What is your relationship to the UU values the Commission identified? How does that align with your values?

If you’d like to know more about the Article II Study Commission, you can read more here. You can access their proposed revision in their report here. And, Rev. Sara has put together a bunch of Article II resources that you can access here, which includes the forums we have hosted.

The proposed revisions and Sunday’s service may have stirred something in you. If you’d like to talk through those stirrings or want more information, please reach out to me or Rev. Sara. We’d be happy to accompany you as you explore. Please also reach out to us if you are interested in serving as an OUUC delegate (representative) at the General Assembly in June when the vote on the proposed revisions will take place.

This month of March, we will reflect on the spiritual theme of “Commitment.” Also this month we will hold our annual Stewardship Drive, where we ask for financial commitments to sustain the work of OUUC.

As we explore this theme together, I invite you to remember the commitment of the Article II Study Commission to reflect our UU values of equity and justice. They offered an invitation to walk our talk. Let’s answer that call.

Blessings on your week.

Rev. Mary
