Coffee talk with Dr. Guzman
In 2001, I was working as a chemistry and physics teacher and earning my master's degree from Montclair State University. The classes focused on everything about education except for how to deal with the events that took place on September 11 of that year. My friends and colleagues in education always said these are things that they don't teach you in Graduate School; fast forward to today, and the current events have earned the same saying, "these are things that they don't teach you in Graduate School!"
We are one week into this school closure, and I am very proud and pleased with the support and camaraderie that everyone has exhibited. As of today, March 23, 2020, we are slated to be out of school until further notice. The school building continues to be closed to all students and staff except for breakfast and lunch distribution. Until such time that we do return, I implore all parents to keep your students on track with the completion of their daily assignments. Teachers will be available from 9 am – 1 pm to answer student questions or engage in chat room discussions related to the classwork being assigned. Again, keeping the students on task and engaged is our primary educational objective. This can only be accomplished with your support and encouragement.
To the students – these are trying times for you, and we are here to support you. We are working hard to minimize the impact on your academic year. You must devote the time to complete your assignments and master the new material that is being presented to you. Do not be afraid to reach out to your teachers, ask questions if you do not understand something, and to continue to engage in conversations with your friends and classmates. Some of you may be experiencing fear or concern – please reach out to me, your counselors, or anyone on the staff if we can help you through these challenging days. I have attached a link below from your counselors. Your Blue Jay family is here to help you in any way that we can.
In a special note to the Senior Class – You, the Class of 2020, will have so much to talk about at your reunions in years to come! I know that you are thinking about the end of the school year and all the activities that occur during your senior year. I want you to know that we are working to ensure as little disruption to these events as possible. You have worked hard to get to this point in your academic career, and we all want it to end on a high note.
We will continue to update the entire school community as we move into the upcoming weeks. As we enter week two of this school closure, please continue to work hard and be true Blue Jays! If you need any assistance or need to talk, please contact any of your teachers, counselor, or administration; we will assist you in any way that we can.
Sincerely,
Alex Guzmán, Ed.D.

A Message from MHS Counselors
Good afternoon,
We hope everyone is healthy and adjusting well to our Distance Learning days.
The Counseling Department has put together a website using Google Sites to share different resources, videos, and other ideas with our students. Please feel free to check it out and use anything there. We will continue to update it and add new material.
There is a link to this site in the Counseling menu on the High School webpage. Here is the link to the site.
https://sites.google.com/middlesex.k12.nj.us/mhs-counseling/home
On the main page, there is a link to a Google Form where students are invited to stay connected with us, to check in, to share how they are doing.
