MLK Assembly
Art installment created with cards we collected from students last week. They explained the ways in which they’ve experienced and/or observed discrimination in their lives.
OHS Senior MLK Assembly Committee Team Members Brittney Zimmer, Kayla Wilde, and Lilliana Neubauer along with Anthony Cobb, our speaker.
OHS held an assembly this morning that was largely designed by students around the theme of empathy. Following the assembly, and to build on the theme of empathy, the students engaged in a reflective activity in their Pride homerooms about privilege. They participated in a great conversation as they talked through their thoughts and beliefs about discrimination in the school, community, and beyond.
Because MLK day is often a time of volunteering to honor the work of MLK Jr., we are also using this day as a kick off to Global Youth Service Day 2018. Global Youth Service Day is a day when young people go out into their communities to participate in service projects. Last year we had about 45 students who participated. Today we announced that we’re beginning to form teams for Global Youth Service Day on April 20th, and they’ll begin to start planning service projects next week.

ACT Practice
On February 27, 2018, all OHS grade 11 students will take the ACT with writing test. This is a paper and pencil test.
Specific information about the test day will be shared with students, parents and staff in the coming weeks.
The ACT with writing helps students understand what they need to learn next so they can build rigorous high school course plans and identify career areas that align with their interests. Scores from the administration of the ACT with writing can be used by students for a variety of purposes including college admission, scholarships, course placement, and NCAA eligibility. All students are encouraged to take advantage of the free ACT preparation materials.
ACT has provided access to practice materials. Click below to access:
Students for Service Relay for Life Fund Raiser
This year Oconomowoc High School's Students 4 Service Club is planning a schoolwide advocacy and fundraising campaign to benefit the American Cancer Society. Throughout this campaign, Students 4 Service will be coordinating monthly fundraisers all leading up to our BIG event, Relay for Life, on May 11th, 2018.
Relay for Life is a team event that celebrates cancer survivors, and raises funds for the American Cancer Society research, education, prevention, advocacy and patient services. It is a fun, outdoor fundraising event where teams take turns walking or running around a track.
A few additional notes:
· Team Registration opens in March. If you would like to hear about our latest planning and fundraising opportunities, please follow our social media accounts: @OconRelay (twitter)
· Recognizing and Celebrating Survivors is one of the most meaningful aspects of Relay for Life. We invite all survivors to join us! If you, a family member or a friend has battled cancer, please encourage them to participate. Interested survivors, please contact Ms. Hoffman

What Our Week Looked Like
Congratulations to Amber Walters for winning the 1st annual Tim O’Brien Homes best house design challenge!
Architects from Tim O’Brien Homes came and spoke to the CEA students earlier in the year. They gave them an actual lot in Oconomowoc to design their house on. When choosing the best design they looked at 3 main criteria:
- General flow/efficiency of the floor plan
- Elevation aesthetics
- Constructability/structural feasibility
The architect’s also gave an honorable mention to Rhys Jones and Michael Balsewicz.
The goal is to one day have Mr. Jappinen's CEA students design the house that Steve Olson’s Building Trades 3 class would actually build the following year!
