Examples and Definitions
Pure Substances:
Matter that is only composed of only one type of substance.
Elements
A pure substance that cannot be separated into a simpler substance by physical or chemical means.
Examples:
-Hydrogen
-Oxygen
-Silicon
Compounds
A pure substance composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. Compounds can only be separated by chemical means, not physically.
Common Compounds:
- Water
- Salt
- Vinegar
Mixtures
A combination of two or more pure substances that are NOT chemically combined. Mixtures can be physically separated.
Examples of Mixtures:
- Jelly Beans
- Cake batter
