Computer Monitors


A computer monitor is a display adapter that displays information processed by the computer's video card. When a video card or graphics card converts information from 1s and 0s into images and then using this information (codes) it converts it from codes to images that display on the computer monitor.

Attributes/Types of Computer Monitors

Computer monitors vary in different types of sizes. The two types of computer monitors are CRT and LCD Monitors. The sizes of the monitors vary from 10 inches - 50 inches. Having a 50 inch monitor seems too big but hey, people may like it like that.
CRT monitors are cathode ray tubes that use green, blue, and red electrons flowing from the left to the right filling in each line on the display. When the electrons flowing hit the phosphor on the CRT monitor, the electrons glow for a short period of time. Every so often these need to be refreshed, and if the video card can not refresh it will cause the screen to flicker.

LCD monitors is a type of a flat panel monitor. The design of the monitor is that it should be thin. This means that the computer screen is flat instead of being curved. The LCD monitor screen is created by electric voltages hitting liquid crystal cells which allows 64 different shades per cell/pixel. LCD monitors have ONE resolution size.

The function of the mouse is to give the user a way to control the cursor and choose what the computer does by clicking on programs, links, etc. It also has the right click function which allows you to see all possible options for that particular item and a scroll wheel to move up and down a page. It is essentially a tool to navigate through the computer. A keyboard’s function is to give the user a way to input letters, numbers and symbols to the computer. It then comprehends and displays them or follows the command associated with the key, depending on which program is open.

Attributes (Mouse)

Most people settle for a simple two button mouse, but a there are many other features and attributes some mice have. Different people have different grips/hand size and that means they would need a mouse that suits them and their preferences. Mice also come in wireless or wired. A wireless mouse can be nice for the flexibility of not having a wire interfere, but do tend to have a very small bit of lag. They come in RF or Bluetooth, RF being the more responsive type of mouse. Mice also carry features like weight control and extra mapable buttons, which come in handy for gamers. The sensitivity of your mouse also is a factor and should be taken into consideration if you would like to make precise movements.

Attributes (Keyboard)

Keyboards are similar to mice, as they also have the option of being wireless or wired. They also have different sizes, to suit the user and their computing needs. You may also want to look into the type of keyboard you need for what you’ll be using it for as there are quite a few different types. Mechanical keyboards, ergonomic keyboards and standard keyboards are the main ones and choosing from the three should purely based on your needs for the computer. If you are planning to game you may want a mechanical or gaming keyboard, or if you’re a casual user you may want to go for a simple standard keyboard. A gaming keyboard comes with everything a standard does, but can come with the addition of some mapable keys, more responsive keys, functions keys and even touch screens. The connectivity of a wireless keyboard is also important, and Bluetooth keyboards are generally not as great in this category than other RF ones are. The response time is how fast the keyboard can send the single that a key has been pressed and is generally measured in hertz.

A video card is what processes your images so they can then be displayed on the monitor. They are found on motherboards and contain 4 main parts; processing unit, memory, a cooling mechanism and connections to a display device. It is essentially a dedicated card to output graphics more efficiently and at a higher quality than simply using your CPU.


FPS is the major factor in finding a good video card and it is how fast your graphics card can output a frame for every second. The higher your FPS is the less you will be bothered with visual lag and you will have better quality images. FPS can be improved by getting a video card that has a better core and memory clock. Frequency and memory space are two major factors when choosing a video card as well. Frequency is essentially how fast the video card operates and is measured in Megahertz and Gigahertz. A good graphics card would be recommended for people who would like to game or display 3D images. The best quality of video cards is 4K, as it is currently the highest resolution possible. A wider memory bus allows more data to be transferred per second the video card and the video memory.

Computer speakers is a interesting way for the computer to interact with the user using the computer. They provide a means for the computer to produce sound through. Without computer speakers, you wouldn't be able to do anything on the computer that requires sound. For example, if you want to watch a video, you can't hear the sound if you don't have speakers. Speakers are important because you wouldn't be able to hear or listen to anything you do on the computer so it will take the joy out of watching a video or a movie.

Attributes/Types of Speakers

There are different types of speakers, depending on what kind of speakers you like or want to use. The two types of speakers are digital and analog speakers. Digital speakers are better speakers to get because they provide much more clarity and definition in the sound. The clarity of digital speakers is usually involved with the surround sound clarity.

Functions of the Sound Card

On most computers, the mother board carries the sound card inside of them. If you want to get better sound on the other hand, you can purchase a separate sound card for your computer. A separate sound card uses better and higher quality components. The PRIMARY function of the Sound Card is to translate the information between two kinds of information. They translate between Digital and Analog information. Without the sound card the computer would NEVER be able to produce any sound which is a bad case if you love listening to things on your computer!

Attributes/Types of Sound Cards

Sound cards usually have four different major components.

Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) - It makes it possible to connect digital data to Analog Sound.

Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) - It makes it possible to make digital recordings from analog sound inputs.

Interface to connect to Motherboard (PCI)

Input/Output Connectors - These connectors make it possible for you to connect headphones/microphone to the computer to get a higher quality of sound to listen or hear from.

Functions of the Motherboard

The main function of the Motherboard in the computer is to act as a main circuit board that connects to all the components in the computer for the computer to operate. The motherboard also facilitates and approve the communication with other devices. The motherboard is designed around the type of CPU (Central Processing Unit). The motherboards also have external connectors to connect a mouse or a keyboard, display adapters, and audio jacks such as microphones or speakers. It also allows USB's to be plugged into the USB component of the motherboard. Without the Motherboard a compute would NOT be able to function.

Attributes/Types of Motherboards

XT Motherboards - XT stands for eXtended Technology. These motherboards are the old type that come inside old computers. In these motherboards you may find old processor sockets, RAM slots, and 12-Pin Power connectors. In these Motherboards you will NOT find USB ports.

AT Motherboards - AT stands for advanced Technology. These motherboards have PGA Sockets (Pin Grid Array), RAM slots, 20-Pin power connectors, as well as PCI and ISA Slots. So this is a competitive motherboard with the XT Motherboards.

Baby AT Motherboards - Baby AT Motherboards are the combination of XT Motherboards and AT Motherboards. They have both types of processor sockets which are slot type and PGA type. These motherboards also include SD RAM slots, DDR RAM slots, PCI/ISA slots, 12-Pin and 20-Pin Power connectors as long with Ports.

ATX Motherboards - ATX stands for Advanced Technology eXtended. All the latest motherboards that are being made have ATX in them. In these motherboards you would be able to find MPGA processor sockets, DDR RAM slots, PCI slots, AGP slots, primary and secondary IDE interfaces, 20/24-PIN ATX Power connectors and also Include Ports. Out of all these motherboards the best one would be ATX motherboards as they are more modern and advanced for our computers to run smoothly and faster without any difficulties.

What Are USB Ports Used For?

USB is short for Universal Serial Bus. The purpose of USB's are to transfer information or to connect with devices to use on your PC. Usb ports are in a laptop or a PC for a usb stick or wire to be plugged into. They are used with usb sticks to transfer information from one PC to another PC. You can also plug USB wires into the ports. For example people can plug their keyboard or mouse into a USB port and it establishes a connection with the device so it can be used with your computer. The beauty of USB ports is that they are so simple to use and they are compatible with lots of different devices. Just to name a few they can connect with speakers, printers, webcams and so many other things.

What Is A BIOS Chip?

BIOS is short for Basic Input Output System. It has a couple of different functions. Starting off it includes instructions on how to load basic computer hardware. The BIOS chip also includes a test called the Power On Self Test, the point of this test is to basically make sure your computer can boot up properly. If your computer doesn't pass the test you will hear a specific number of beeps to help you figure out what is wrong with your computer. Another thing a BIOS chip is used for is to configure system settings such as computer passwords, the time and the date.

A network card allows your computer to connect to the internet. If you look at the picture it has a port that you can connect a wire into. The name of the wire is called an ethernet cable that you can connect from your router to your computer. It makes your computers run much faster on the internet.

What Is An Optical Drive

An optical disk drive is a drive that uses laser light or electromagnetic waves to read disks such as DVD's and CD's. I found out that the way the optical drive can read the disks is very interesting and cool indeed. A disk has millions of bumps and dips on it that the laser can read. The laser reads them as zeros and ones and the computer can understand that.
