Principal's Update

Hello Hound Families,

It was a great week that culminated with our Valentine's celebrations. Although a little subdued compared to years past, the kids had a great time and really enjoyed the gift of giving. I especially enjoy the cards and treats I receive. The students are so excited to share with me and the office staff. Thank you for including us on your list.

Student Safety is our #1 Priority

Thank you for you support with drop-off in the morning. It is critical for student safety that drivers wait until 8:35 when supervision is visible on the sidewalk to release children to school. If you arrive early, you are welcome to park and wait until drop-off begins

Below Zero Arrival

Below Zero Arrival involves students entering the building directly upon arrival. Temperatures fluctuate so the decision is often made close to arrival time. BAS uses the Weather Underground website for temperature data. The website can be found on the Hilton and BAS Website by clicking the snowflake at the bottom of the mainpage. The WU app tends to have different data, so we go strictly by the website information that is collected from the main street weather station in Brighton.

Kindness Week

Coming up the week of February 22nd is Kindness week. Families can order 'Be Kind' T-Shirts by visiting the Ivory Vines website (ivoryvines.com) and clicking on KINDNESS WEEK.

Virtual Round-Up / JK and Kindergarten

Kindergarten round-up will be virtual this year. On Tuesday, February 23rd, each elementary will be hosting a virtual presentation about kindergarten offerings in the Brighton Area Schools. Families can attend either of the building presentations, and they will all be recorded, so viewing can take place after the live event. Here is the link for the enrollment page that includes presentation links for each elementary.

Spread the Word - Kindergarten Round-Up

If you or anyone you know have children starting JK or Kindergarten next year, registration opened on February 1st. It's always a challenge to reach families that don't have children in the system, as we don't have means to notify them. Please share this information so we can get everyone registered as soon as possible. All the information is available on the district website. More details, including the link to the website can be found further down in this newsletter.

Have a great weekend,

Jeff Eisele

Hilton Principal

Winter is Here!

Please remember to send your child to school in snow gear!

We line up outside for arrival and dismissal, and go out for recess unless the temperature or wind chill is below zero. With temperatures getting colder, it is important for students to have heavy gloves and hats.

Welcome to the Counselor Corner!

This month I will be visiting classrooms to talk about Empathy and standing in the shoes of others. By looking at multiple perspectives we gain a better understanding of how our actions impact others and the world around us. We will discuss how others may feel in a given situation and where they are coming from. This provides an avenue to learn what we can do to best support our family, friends, and peers when they need us most. This tool of empathy is important for effective problem solving, working in a group setting, and having compassion for others.

Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed at school.

More Resources: The Elementary Counseling Team also has the BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!

Virtual Family Science Night

Our Zoom call will start at 6 pm, when we will announce our Science Fair winners, and show the 3rd/4th grade, 1st place winners videos live. Then, Mad Science Detroit will take over at 6:30pm and students will hear a story of how Frosty ate too many cookies, and now can't fit through the door of his house. He'll need our scientific magic to help him return home! Watch as our special Snowman is defrosted right before their eyes! As a special treat, you’ll get to see some hair-raising fun as we learn about static electricity with our Van de Graaff generator. The audience will also discover how Jack Frost can fill an eight-foot air bag with one breath! Then, as a grand finale, our wacky Mad Scientist will introduce the audience to a mysterious North Pole rock that turns out to be Dry Ice!! Using the Dry Ice, the Mad Scientist will make bubbling potions, popping corks, shivering quarters, and clouds of fog!

After the show from 7:10-7:30, everyone can participate as our Mad Scientists guide you through a few winter-themed experiments with a few easy to find around the house items.
