A Message From the Principal
As we continue our campaign to raise awareness about bullying prevention in our schools. Here at Silver Springs will be doing things to promote kindness. For example, each Monday during the month of October let's all wear blue to promote kindness!
This week's Choose Kindness Challenge is to make friends with someone you don't know. What are some things that you could do to make a new friend?
1. Introduce yourself to someone that is new to our school.
2. If you see someone sitting on the buddy bench, invite them to join your recess activity.
3. Sit next to someone new at lunch.
Let's see you we all can use Habit 8 by Finding our Voice and Inspiring Others to Find theirs. I look forward to hearing your stories about all the new friends that you have made.
Here's to a fun, kind, October!
Katie Booth, Principal
Thank you to all those families who joined our galaxy of stars!
The Silver Springs PTA could not do all that it is does without the generous donations of our families. We appreciate your support. Although the Invest In Your Child campaign has ended, you may join the PTA and Invest In Your Child anytime during the school year.
Congratulations to our last IIYC raffle winners this past week. The Yama family won a Target gift card and the Giroux and Shaw family received a book.
Together we can make Silver Springs- Out of This World!

It’s time again for PTA Reflections…
Encourage your child to unleash their inner artist through the PTA’s Reflections Art Program! This year’s theme, “What is Your Story?” encourages students to think about who they are and what they want others to know about them.
Have your child get creative with an original work of art. Students may enter as many entries as they’d like, in one or more of the following categories:
· Dance Choreography
· Film Production
· Literature
· Music Composition
· Photography
· Visual Arts
All artwork must be submitted by November 01, 2016. Required documents are the checklist, student entry form, and consent form. Please follow ALL instructions on the checklist to make sure that the entry is acceptable or it will not be judged. No writing name on the front or glitter in visual arts. All artwork needs a title and artist statement. Most importantly, the theme must be reflected in the original work of art. Each category has specific rules that need to be followed like “presentation” or “format”. Read all rules carefully and follow specific directions before submitting artwork!

“LET’S READ MATH” A program of Math Enrichment for Second and Third Grade Students
IMAGINE being rich on one Sunday and poor the next—all because you couldn’t count very well!
IMAGINE being a very greedy triangle that becomes an octagon because you keep wanting to add more angles!
IMAGINE the wonders of apples, including a tasting test! Yum!
IMAGINE math as a fun activity for parents and children!
Want to imagine more? Sign up your child and yourself for “Let’s Read Math,” a FREE three-session program that combines familiar children’s literature with fun math activities.
WHY THIS PROGRAM?
· “LET’S READ MATH” was developed by a leading expert, Dr. Claire Passatino, Ed.D., with the goal of building positive attitudes towards math.
· Dr. Passatino has trained local members of the American Association of University Women Northville-Novi (AAUW-NN).
· Workshops have been held for four years for Northville students and Novi 2nd and 3rd grade students in either the Fall or Spring. Children and parents alike enjoyed them.
· The workshops are designed to be fun! And you and your child will be inspired to follow up with more fun math activities at home. Plan to attend all four sessions!
· Want to know more? Check out www.letsreadmath.com.

Supporting the The 7 Habits at home!
Habit 5– Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
What this means: Listen before you talk. In order to communicate effectively, we must first understand each other.
“I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings.”
“I try to see things from their viewpoints.”
“I listen to others without interrupting.”
“I am confident in voicing my ideas.”
“I look people in the eyes when talking.”
How can I do this in my life?
1. Listen.
2. Put yourself in the other person’s place.
3. Notice a person’s body language, tone, and reflection in their voice.
