AMCMS Principal's Office
What is going on in the Principal's Office?
My Challenge to You
When you click on the article above it will open to the article that contains the short video that will show 6 jobs that do not even exist yet. Take a look at it real quick.
What do you think? Did you ever think those jobs would ever be created?
So the question comes to mind about how are we preparing kids in schools today for these types of jobs? Jobs that do not even exist as you are reading this. What skills are needed for these types of jobs? Here are some areas of skill development we need to focus on in our school to help students for jobs we don't even know about yet:
- Collaboration
- Information Evaluation
- Tolerance of Others
- Real World Application of Learning
Collaboration
Students need to be able to work with others in the classroom. This helps students to learn how to navigate other personalities and be able to work toward a common goal or learning outcome. If we do not provide opportunities for student collaboration in our classes, when will they learn?
Information Evaluation
We need to help students to learn how to evaluate information to determine what is useful or not useful. In this day and age of "fafe news" and social media where everyone can post their viewpoint and opinions, we must teach students to be able to navigate the mass amounts of information and find useful and relevant information.
Tolerance of Others
We live in a time where people do not have patience, empathy, or compassion for one another. There are mixed feelings about the role of schools in supports these sorts of skills, but I submit that if we do not teach this to students while they are in a public school then who will? The habits that students form today will stick with them for years to come and if we do not teach habits of tolerance we are setting students up for failure in the future when they are expected to be productive members of society.
Real World Application of Learning
We need to connect the educational learning to the real world. If students are not able to make those connections they will not see the relevance of education to their world. We must create these connections for our kids because most of them are not able to make those connections for themselves.
I challenge you to think about the types of lessons you are developing and how you are adding in the "soft skills" into the learning experience. These "soft skills" are what employers are looking for in their employees. Employers are willing to teach people the content of the job, but they are not willing to teach skills like collaboration. We need to focus on that through our content work.
Think. Achieve. Succeed.
Jeff

AMCMS SPED Tip of the Week
In-Class Support
What it is: Students receive in-class support for various reasons: behavior, academics, social skills, organization, and more. Providing in-class support allows for our special education students to meaningfully participate in the general education classroom alongside their peers. In-class support also allow for additional support for our general education students as well.
Role: In-class support staff can help with reteaching, monitoring, clarifying directions, giving students reminders about behaviors, working with small groups, and more. The in-class support staff should act as another teacher in the classroom.
Communication: Open communication is key when working with in-class support. Be sure to let the staff member know what you need for them to be doing - you know what needs to be happening in your classroom, so if you see a need, please speak it!
Behavior: A bonus of having more than one adult in the classroom is behavior management. Having an extra set of eyes and ears can definitely help to keep students on task and interacting appropriately. Follow-through with requests/corrections/redirections is key - The classroom teacher and the assistant should support each other’s requests.
Do you have additional questions about in-class support? Please ask a special education teacher--we are here to help!
