Fork Shoals Library Ledger
News for the week of September 16th
Summer reading results
In order to preserve instructional time, we will not have a summer reading party this year. Participating students will, however, receive recognition and rewards! Each student who participated in this program will receive a certificate, a pencil, a bookmark, and a pass to check out an extra book the next time he/she visits the library. We will also have a poster outside the library with a list of every student (and faculty/staff member) who participated in summer reading.
Top readers for each grade level will also receive a gift certificate for a free book at our upcoming Fall Book Fair! The top readers for each grade level are:
- 1st grade - Bryson Neal - 3,351 pages
- 2nd grade - Matthew Manning - 9,623 pages
- 3rd grade - Abigail Cloud - 2,331 pages
- 4th grade - Rachel Marquis - 6,566 pages
- 5th grade - Alyssa Burford - 6,263 pages
Thanks again to all who participated in summer reading. Keep up the good work!
Reading Challenge update
This nine weeks, students will have the option to read 30 books OR 500 pages. (It may be difficult for older students to read 30 books and still challenge themselves to read "meatier" fare.) Next quarter, K5-2nd grade students will still try to read 30 books, and 3rd-5th grade students will have a quarterly goal of 500 pages.
To print a copy of this quarter's reading challenge sheet, go to http://forkshoalsreads.blog.greenville.k12.sc.us/files/2013/08/1st_quarter_book_challenge.pdf.
The Fall Book Fair is coming soon!
Our Fall Book Fair theme – Reading Oasis: A Cool Place to Discover Hot Books! – takes students on a journey back to Ancient Egypt to an oasis overflowing with fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose books that will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.
Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they’re young. Now is the time. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair.

Book of the Week: The Camping Trip That Changed America
The Camping Trip That Changed America: Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir, and our National Parks, written by Barb Rosenstock and illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein, is a nominee for the 2013-2014 South Carolina Picture Book Award.
I’ve told many students that Theodore Roosevelt is my favorite president. After reading The Camping Trip That Changed America, I suspect many of them will feel the same.
This book explores the 1903 camping trip that took Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir all over the Yosemite area of California. This trip was intended to convince the President that the wild areas of nature needed to be preserved.
Roosevelt and Muir spent several nights in the wilderness, and, according to this book and other accounts, discussed how important the wilderness was and how people needed to be concerned with preservation for future generation. A nature-lover at heart, it didn’t take long for Muir to convince Roosevelt that the government had to do something before the nation simply ran out of trees and wilderness.
Following this camping trip, President Roosevelt made it his mission to protect the nation’s wilderness. He made several areas into historic landmarks, doubled the number of national parks, and became one of the nation’s most passionate conservationists. And although he and John Muir never crossed paths after their historic camping trip, they remained friends who both did what they could to protect the natural resources of the country they loved.
This is a wonderful book for any reader who wished to learn more about the importance of conservation and our country’s–and even the world’s–natural resources and wilderness areas. If even one reader can be convinced that these areas should be preserved, then this book has done its job.
