The open enrollment application period for the 2020-2021 school year is February 3 - April 30, 2020 @ 4:00p.m. Here is a link to the open enrollment application https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment. After the open enrollment window closes on April 30, 2020, the Ashwaubenon School Board will determine who is approved or denied and notify families of their status. Outdoor/Indoor Clothing
With the cold weather upon us, please make sure you send your child to school every day with outdoor clothing (snow pants, boots, mittens, hat, and a warm coat). Please label all clothing with your child’s full name. We will have outdoor recess as long as the temperature and wind chill stay above zero degrees. Please dress your child in layers so they may take a layer off or add a layer if they get too hot or too cold during the school day. Always make sure your child has a pair of shoes to change into once they are inside the building. (Feet get very hot in boots if they wear them all day.)

LIBRARY NEWS
Call Deb Danen or Kathy Rolling at 448-2875, ext. 7113, for more information regarding Cormier’s library.
Book Returns
We are extremely pleased with the enthusiasm the students have demonstrated when coming to the library and the care they are taking with their library books. You as parents can make it even more enjoyable by reading the book to your child and having them return it to the library on their assigned day. If you are not sure when your child has library, please read the classroom newsletter or contact the classroom teacher. We have had a large number of students attending library class without a book. Our policy is that students cannot check out another book until the previous one has been returned.
Library Books and Snow Don’t Mix
In order to protect your child’s library books, we ask that your child NOT stuff their backpacks or book bags with their wet snow pants, mittens, hats, and boots. Please use their library Bee Bag, or send along a plastic grocery bag or large ziploc bag that can be used to protect their library books from wet clothes and art projects with wet glue or glitter. We continue to remind students how important it is to take good care of their books. Please discuss this with your child at home also. Thank you for your help.
Birthday Book Club
The Birthday Book Club is a wonderful way to recognize your child's birthday. If your child donates a book to the library for his/her birthday, your child's name will be added to the Birthday Book Club wall in the library and a bookplate with your son's or daughter's name will be placed inside the cover of the donated book. We will also show his/her class the book your child has donated. Having your child donate a book to the library is a beautiful way for them to understand the act of giving. If you are wondering what to donate, the library could use new hardcover Valentine’s Day or Easter stories. We also have an expanded list of donation ideas posted outside the library door for parents to take.
Sticker Chart – Prizes Needed
To promote positive behavior when classes come to the library they will have the opportunity to earn a sticker on the library behavior chart by being kind, safe, and responsible in the library. When a class has collected four stickers they will receive a reward — a prize from the treasure box! We would appreciate donations of simple prizes for our prize box. Due to health concerns we’d appreciate new or cleaned items only.
2nd RIF Distribution
Cormier’s second of three RIF distributions will be on Tuesday, February 11th, and all students will again be able to select a book to keep for their very own. We will be celebrating with the theme of “Franklin Loves Reading”. All students and staff are encouraged to wear green on that day.

Hearing and Vision Screening
The Brown County Health Department came to Cormier School on Tuesday, January 21 to provide hearing and vision screenings for all 4K and 5K students. If your child did not pass the initial hearing screening, a rescreen will be performed on February 4 to determine if there is a persistent hearing problem. If they still do not pass, a letter will be sent home indicating the importance of following up with a physician and/or audiologist. The screening is not a substitute for a regular examination by your physician but is meant to identify persistent hearing loss in children and bring it to the attention of parents/guardians and teachers.
The vision screening consisted of photo-refractor testing which takes a reading of the child’s eyes and could possibly detect some problems with the eye that cannot be detected through traditional screening methods. If your child already wears glasses, they were tested with their glasses on to make sure the glasses are working properly. The screening provided by Brown County Health Department should not be a substitute for a complete professional eye exam. A child who passes may still have other visual problems. If symptoms such as squinting, headaches, frowning, or frequent blinking are noted, a complete eye exam is recommended. Red, swollen or encrusted eyelids indicate a medical problem requiring a physician’s treatment. If your child did not pass the screening, a letter will be sent home recommending an examination by an eye doctor. The National Society to Prevent Blindness recommends that children have a professional eye exam prior to entering school and up to every other year after that.
Open Enrollment Application Time!
What is Open Enrollment?
Open enrollment is a program that allows parents to apply for their child to attend school in a school district other than the one in which they reside. Applications for open enrollment will be accepted from February 3, 2020 through 4:00 pm on April 30, 2020.
Who is required to apply for Open Enrollment?
· Families that have moved out of the district between February 2019 and February 2020 and want their child(ren) to continue to attend school in the Ashwaubenon School District during the 2020-21 school year.
· Families that are anticipating a move to another district and would like their child(ren) to continue to attend the Ashwaubenon School District during the 2020-21 school year.
· Families that currently reside in another school district but would like their child(ren) to attend the Ashwaubenon School District during the 2020-21 school year.
· Families that reside in another district with a child(ren) currently open enrolled into Ashwaubenon must open enroll siblings that are not open enrolled and want to attend school in Ashwaubenon during the 2020-21 school year. Every child in a family must be open enrolled individually. Having a child(ren) currently open enrolled and attending does not automatically approve every child in the family. Families with children new to the district must apply for open enrollment even if they have siblings currently open enrolled.
You do not have to apply for Open Enrollment if…
If your child is currently open enrolled and attending school in Ashwaubenon, you do not have to re-apply for open enrollment for that child. Ashwaubenon does not require students currently attending schools in the Ashwaubenon School District through open enrollment to re-apply. Once they apply, are accepted and continue to attend our schools, they are open enrolled through graduation. However, if the open enrolled child has a sibling(s) new to the district in 2020-21, the sibling(s) must apply for open enrollment in February.
How do you apply for Open Enrollment?
The preferred method of applying for open enrollment is through the on-line application at https://dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment. The on-line application will be available from Monday, February 3, 2020 through 4:00 pm on Thursday, April 30, 2020. There will be a link to this site on our district website beginning February 3rd. If you do not have access to the internet, paper applications will be accepted. Paper applications must be obtained and submitted to Jennifer Bower at the district office no earlier than February 3rd and no later than 4:00 pm on April 30th. A postmark does not meet this requirement.
If you have any questions about Open Enrollment or need a paper application sent to you, please contact Jennifer Bower at the District Office at 492-2905 ext. 1002.

INFLUENZA INFO
Influenza causes more hospitalizations among young children than any other vaccine-preventable disease. The single best way to protect against seasonal flu and its potential severe complications is for children to get a seasonal influenza vaccine each year. Flu vaccination is recommended for all children aged 6 months and older. Making healthy choices at school and at home can help prevent the flu and spreading flu to others.
Encourage children, parents, and staff to take the following everyday preventative actions to prevent flu:
- Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you
- are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Avoid close contact with people
- who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.
