Parkdale Elementary Weekly Update

This Week...

Dear Staff,

Happy February! It's almost time to plant those pees! The sunshine was nice again this weekend. I hope our IA staff enjoyed their three day weekend. Hopefully teachers found some gold nuggets in their training today to take back to the classroom and your work with students today.

I'll be out for a conference on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week. Garrett Apland (our district ELL Coach) is going to be subbing for me. Please welcome him! He is working on his administrative coursework and is excited for the opportunity to complete some of his practicum days with us. I've invited him to stop in to classrooms and he is excited about the opportunity to learn about our school and to learn about your work with our students. Please contact him if you have something in particular that you would like to have his feedback on.

Have a great week.

Language Support Strategies

I've continued to enjoy being in your classes and have been continuing the collection of opportunities for language practice. Please note that these are intended to be random snippets. I fully understand that at any given point in a lesson it may not be appropriate to be using the strategies below. For example, I was in a classroom last week and the students were taking a quiz. There were no language support strategies being used at that time. That's OK! It is all part of the data. Here is a look at the first and second round of collections:

First Round:
Choral Response: 3.7 opportunities per ~ 10 minutes
Sentence Starters: .27 opportunities per ~ 10 minutes
Precision Partnering: .27 opportunities per ~ 10 minutes
Language Objectives: 0 opportunities per ~ 10 minutes

Second Round:
Choral Response: 2.1 opportunities per ~ 10 minutes
Sentence Starters: 1.3 opportunities per ~ 10 minutes
Precision Partnering: .9 opportunities per ~ 10 minutes
Language Objectives: .3 opportunities per ~ 10 minutes

This is great! We provided more opportunities per 10 minutes for most of the strategies! Please think about your routines and how you might build in opportunities for "miles on the tongue".

Growth Mindset at Parkdale Elementary

The Growth Mindset strategy of the week this week is...

· Model and teach getting excited when the task gets challenging; “The brain is growing”.

Other ideas that we came up with as a staff are linked below:

Teaching the Mountaineer Expectations: Month 5, Week 1

I recently purchased the 2nd Step Principal Kit. This includes weekly announcements and assembly ideas. I'll be on month 5, week 1 this week in case you would like to coordinate your weekly lessons with the school-wide announcements.

Problem Solving - student message

We all have problems that can be hard to solve. Using the Second Step Problem-Solving Steps can help us solve our problems! The first step is S: Say the problem. When you have a problem, it’s very important to say what the problem is respectfully and without blame. Knowing exactly what the problem is will help you find the best solution! This week, remember to use your words and say the problem respectfully.
