SIOP UPDATE #2
Components 1 and 2 of Sheltered Instruction
Component #1 Planning
Planning must produce lessons that enable students to make connections between their own knowledge and experiences and the new information being taught.
. The teacher and students should use supplementary materials such as charts, graphs, pictures, illustrations, multimedia, and manipulatives, as well as demonstrations. Graphic organizers, such as outlines and labeling, should also be used, in addition to study guides, marginal notes, adapted text, and highlighted text. ( John Seidtz).
Component #2: Building Background
Marzano Strategy for Building Academic Background Knowledge:
From a secondary perspective, I like the strategy developed and presented by Robert Marzano - it can be handled so easily within the context of what you are currently teaching. It is a great way to begin a unit of study and is something that works well for all students.
1. The teacher provides a description, explanations or examples of the new terms
2. Students restate the explanations in their own words.
3. Students create non-linguistic representations of the terms.
4. Students periodically do activities that help them add to their knowledge of vocabulary terms.
5. Students are asked to discuss the terms with one another.
6. Periodically students are involved in games that allow them to play with the terms.
Crazy Drawings:
- Have students form pairs - backs to each other
- One student gets a picture/photo prepared earlier from the stack ( material is relevant to what you are currently studying)
- The student holding the card needs to give good oral instruction to the other student, and the student needs to draw what is being described without seeing the original picture.
- Pair shares and then explains to the rest of the class what the drawing is and how it holds significance to what is currently being taught.
- Variation of this build the 100, 000 pyramid, set the timer and have the pairs play that old game show version using material from class
Vocab. Improv:
- Assign each student in the class a different vocabulary word/phrase.
- Give the student one to two mins. to think of the word and come up with a motion to symbolize the word.
- Have students form a large circle so they are all side by side.
- Start with the first student and have him/her loudly say the vocabulary term along with a quick motion for the word.
- After the student performs the action saying the word, have the rest of students repeat the word and motion together.
- Have the next student in the circle repeat the word just stated along with the motion and have him/her add their word to the mix. Repeat previous steps until all students have had a chance to share their word. The chain just keeps getting longer and longer but they are having to repeat all the words every time.
- Finally, as a group go through all the word/all the motions.
I am thinking about my larger classes, I would break it down into two or maybe three circles and build up over the course of the year.
