In a Blink of an Eye - There goes January!
A Note from Mr. Clement
Somehow with a blink of our eyes we find ourselves already heading into the second month of 2024. It has been quite a full month of action, even though we have had shortened weeks since returning to school from our December break. Our students have successfully completed their assessments for the Winter window. There are some impressive growth scores achieved by countless students from the Fall to Winter assessments. Certainly a testament to their effort and the teachers that guide their learning process. Iโm very proud of all of them.
With the upcoming departure of our Head Bus Driver following February 2, we have been working on strategies to fill the transportation needs of our students. We have advertised for the position of Head Bus Driver and have reached out to local districts for possible transportation assistance for both the short and long term. Updates will be shared as the plan develops.
Kudos to all of our parents/guardians for making sure all of our students are coming to school prepared to be outside for recesses. We have had some interesting weather conditions thus far this winter to say the least. Thank you for ensuring that all of our students are bundled up for any and all conditions.

Basketball
Last week was a blast watching SES basketball! Tuesday (1/23/24) versus Penbrook (B team boys and A team boys) proved to be two incredible matches. Surry lost both games, with scores tight, but played hard. The two point shot for Penbrook in the last few seconds of the game was heartbreaking for Surry, but they could walk off the court knowing they played hard.
Thursday (1/25/24) versus The Bay School proved to be two more amazing games with both our girls and boys playing. The girls won their game by four points, followed by the Surry boys who won against the once undefeated Bay School team. Again, both games were close with high intensity and amazing support from the crowd. Great teamwork, execution, and intensity were all on display by our student-athletes.
What excitement we had on the basketball court last night (1/29/24)! Our Boys B team had a nailbiter with Brooklin last night pulling off an overtime win! All of our boys contributed to earn this victory. Our Girls team went back and forth with Brooklin in the nightcap, as well. Ziva Brown hit a 3 pointer with 13 seconds left to tie the score in regulation and the girls went on to win the game in double overtime! The crowd went wild and both teams earned their victories with great teamwork and hustle!
Next Game: Wednesday at home versus Castine! Boys play first at 4pm.
News from the PTCO
The Surry P(arent) T(eacher) C(ommunity) O(rganization) works to support teachers, staff, and students of Surry Elementary, provides events for our students and families, fundraisers for our programs and special needs of our staff, and steps in to help with other needs that the school might have.
Meetings are held on the first non-holiday Monday of each month at 6pm in the school gym. All are welcome to join in meetings, volunteer for events, make donations, or work behind the scenes as each of our time and abilities allow!
Next PTCO meeting will be February 5th at 6pm in the SES Library
Thank you to all the volunteers who have signed up for the rewards cart!!!
๐๐๏ธIf you would like to contribute items to the reward cart at SES, the PTCO has created an Amazon wishlist. We love being able to offer the cart to reward students for their positive behavior, but it gets costly for the PTCO.
If there are items not on this list and you think would be a good fit for the cart, feel free donate them. http://tinyurl.com/surryptcorewards
Nurse's Note ๐ฉบ
Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children under the age of fourteen. The U.S. recorded 1,184 traffic fatalities of children fourteen or younger in 2021, an increase of approximately 8% from the 1,101 deaths in 2020. To change this statistic, Maine implemented mandatory car seat laws to maximize childrenโs safety while riding in vehicles.
**Children between birth and two years old need a rear-facing car seat for maximum safety. Rear-facing car seats face the rear of the vehicle in the back seat. **
**The Maine 5-point harness law requires a child to be restrained in a harness as long as they are under fifty-five pounds.**
**Children under the age of 8 who weigh less than eighty pounds, and are shorter than fifty-seven inches in height are required to ride on a booster seat. **
**Maine requires children to sit in the backseat until they are twelve, if possible. A child riding in the front seat must wear a seat belt like any other passenger. If a vehicle does not have a backseat, the child can sit in the front seat with a seat belt.**
