Writing
Your child should know who he/she will be researching for the Famous Hoosier project. Students will be given class time this week to begin research, but may need to spend some time outside of school looking for books and articles. Students need to have at least 3-5 resources in class by Thursday, 2/9.
Indiana History
We have finished studying the first settlers in Indiana. Students should have brought home their notes to use to study on Friday. We also did the Kahoot! below in class today as a review. Students are welcome to play again at home!

We will be moving on in history to the 1700s while learning about continued settlement by Europeans, conflicts between Native Americans and Europeans, the French and Indian War, and the Revolutionary War. For each of those, we will build some background knowledge about the big picture of the event, but focus on battles and affects on Indiana. We will test over these lessons on Thursday, February 23.
Language Arts
Wordly Wise: We will begin learning unit 11 this week. 11A & 11B will be due on Thursday. The unit 11 test will be on Friday, February 17.
Words Their Way: We will continue splitting into our small groups for spelling this week. Tic-Tac-Toe activities will be due on Thursday and their quiz will be Friday.
Math
We are back to learning about more fractions! This week, we will be focusing on decomposing fractions (breaking them into smaller pieces), learning about parts of the whole, adding fractions, and adding mixed numbers.
Science
We will spend this week reviewing our heat and electricity unit and will take our test on Thursday, February 9. The best way to study is by reviewing the chapters, the quizzes that we have been completing in class, and the ISTEP+ review at the end of the chapter. Students will need to be able to respond to the following short answer questions:
- Conduction and convection are two ways to transfer heat. Describe how the two ways are similar and how they differ.
- Name one device that requires electrical energy to run and describe the energy transformation that takes place. (i.e. A stove converts electrical energy to heat energy or a vacuum converts electrical energy to mechanical energy)
- Given a table of insulators and conductors, be able to identify which items are placed in the wrong category. Given additional examples of materials, place them in the correct category.

Family Wellness Night
The staff at Stonegate Elementary is pleased to announce that we will be holding our first Family Wellness Night on Thursday, February 16th from 6-7:30pm. We will have a variety of activities to promote wellness.
Registration is required and students must be accompanied by an adult.
Registered Sessions:
1.Nutritional Snacking –Healthy snacking can be easy with MyPlate. When using MyPlate as a guide, this will help your child eat healthy snacks and meet their nutritional requirements for a healthy diet.Students can make and take a healthy snack and parents will receive suggestions for healthy snacks for their child.
2.Math on the Move –Let’s make math MOVE! We’re all used to seeing math ON the page, but math ideas can also be explored OFF the page as well. In this activity parents and kids work together to learn simple foot-based dance patterns.Connecting movement to learning is a powerful way for learners to make sense of math and supports physical health and brain development at the same time.Come one, come all, we’re going to have a great time playing with math!
3.Emotional/Social Development –Whether you’re 5 or 55, we are all on a social learning journey….trying to EFFECTIVELY share space with one another, take care of ourselves, and keep others having green thoughts about us.
plus Yoga, the Heart Course, and more!
Registration flyers went home on Friday. Please send those in this week if you plan to attend!
