Meals at Deerfield

Here are a few reminders about breakfast and lunch at Deerfield.

Breakfast Time - 7:45am-8:00am

  • If your child is eating breakfast at school they need to be at school by 7:45 when the doors open so they have plenty of time to eat before the 8:00 bell rings and school begins.
  • We stop serving breakfast at 8:00 sharp! If your child is not in the breakfast line by that time they will not be able to get a breakfast.
  • All breakfast eaters are expected to be finished eating no later than 8:05. If you would like your child to eat breakfast at school they should be here as close to 7:45 as possible, so they have plenty of time to eat.

Extras at Lunch

Students are allowed to get an extra main dish during lunch, but MUST have money on their account to do so. Student on free/reduced lunch are allowed one complete meal. If wanting seconds, they too must have money on their account. All extras are at a charge.

Soda Pop at Lunch

We have noticed students bring soda pop in their lunch. We do not allow students to drink soda pop in the lunchroom.

Vision & Hearing Screenings October 4th & 5th

Lawrence Public Schools conducts Hearing and Vision Screenings mandated by the state of Kansas. DEERFIELD will be screening students on OCTOBER 4 & 5, 2022. To ensure all students can access curriculum and instruction, the district screens students' Hearing and Distance Vision for concerns that may require further follow-up. The district conducts mass hearing/vision screenings at the schools for students K-12. In some grades, not all students participate in the screenings.

Parents/Guardians who DO NOT want their children to participate in hearing and vision screenings must complete an Opt-out Request Form for EACH STUDENT by 8 a.m. on OCTOBER 4. If you need a paper form, you may contact Dianne Thomas, RN, Deerfield School Nurse to provide you with a paper copy.

If you want your child's hearing and vision screening to be completed, DO NOT COMPLETE THE OPT-OUT REQUEST FORM. The district will automatically conduct the screenings in accordance with its protocols for hearing and vision.

  • Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

    Respectfully,
Lawrence Public Schools Nurses, Nursing Facilitator, and Audiologist

Equity Resource Guide

The Equity Resource guide was created by the Deerfield Equity team in the hopes that families can find resources, events and additional information to support our vision of all students attaining an equitable education. Expect 3 more guides to be sent out this year.

CHANGE MAKER OF THE WEEK:

Our goal is for our students to see themselves in our change makers and to also learn that they can do anything they put their mind to. Another goal is for our students to see people who are unfamiliar to them, to grow in empathy, and push for justice for the inequalities that marginalized communities face.

Read-a-Thon Fundraiser Kicks Off in October!

Deerfield’s fall fundraiser will be a Read-a-Thon to help support Deerfield PTO and our teachers and students. Read-a-Thon will run October 17-October 24th. Last year, Read-a-Thon was a huge success with more than $12,000 raised to help support our students and teachers. With your help—and the help of your readers—we hope to make this year’s Read-a-Thon just as successful and a lot of fun!

Read-a-Thon pledge forms will soon go home in your child’s Thursday folder. Students are asked to secure sponsors to either (1) sponsor a flat amount regardless of total minutes read, or (2) sponsor a student for an amount for each minute read.

We will have many fun activities to support our readers, and we will send more information soon to let you know all the details.

Volunteers Needed to Support the Book Fair

Our first Book Fair in two years will be Oct 17-20! We will be open for shopping after school and for conference times. Come by and check out our wonderful selections! PTO will soon have sign-up sheets for parents to help staff the book fair. Staffing the book fair is a great way to meet other families, interact with students, and earn store credit to buy your own books.

PTO Still Collecting Class Party Funds

Parents and Caregivers, Deerfield PTO needs your help to ensure that classroom parties are a success this year! We are asking for a $5/student contribution to help fund three classroom parties that will take place in October, December, and March. If you have already sent in your contribution, THANK YOU! If you have not, please consider contributing whatever amount you can to your child’s class party fund.

Your $5 helps fund snacks, games, and fun crafts! Any funds not used for the parties is held in a separate fund (one for each grade) and will be applied to that grade’s fifth grade recognition activities and/or party. If you cannot contribute $5, please consider contributing whatever amount you can.

Please return this PTO Party Funds Payment form, along with your payment, to your child’s classroom teacher or to the office:

Mrs. Bobey is September's Deerfield High 5 Winner

Congratulations to our High-Five September winner, Mrs. Bobey!

Mrs. Bobey is Deerfield’s school counselor and was nominated by Willow Weiss. Willow is in Mrs. Neises’s 2nd grade class. Willow thinks Mrs. Bobey deserves a big high-five because “Mrs. Bobey does a lot of work helping kids. She helps kids when they need help.” We agree, Willow!

Congratulations Mrs. Bobey! Thank you for all that you do!

The beautiful flowers were donated by Dillons on Lawrence Ave. Mrs. Bobey, Willow and her classmates will be treated to a pizza party from Toppers!

Thank you to all the students who nominated our amazing Deerfield staff and teachers this month. Nominations for October will be accepted until Tuesday, October 18th! Students can fill out a paper form in the library or complete an online submission here: https://forms.gle/K59vX78cMufd1bvc8
