The best thing your child can do this summer is READ, READ, READ! Unfortunately, "summer slide" is very real and can affect your student. To make sure your child does not lose the gains he/she made over the school year, please encourage them to read, write, and practice math facts this summer. Below are some ideas of things you can do to keep your child on track!

Did you know that if your child reads 20 minutes a day (M-F), that over the summer he/she will have read a total of 1,160 minutes! Please make sure your child is reading books with a lexile level between 550-800. If your child scored over the 205 RIT on their MAP Reading test, please follow that lexile level (highlighted under their results). You can find the lexile level of a book at www.lexile.com.

Reading out loud can help with fluency. Reading a favorite poem or text over and over again out loud is great practice. You can even race your child to see who can read faster :)

Practicing math facts (+, -, x, /) is best. Many students do not have them memorized. Ask them to sing their skip counting songs to help! Also, practice multiplication - shortcut method and division over the summer. IXL is a great online tool that the students can use over the summer - we have already started practicing 5th grade concepts!

A great idea is to have your students journal throughout the summer, especially after a fun event or trip! Read your child entries (if they allow) and write back to them. Remind them to follow C.O.P.S - Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling.

Note From Me

I would like to sincerely thank each of you for sharing your child with me this past year! This year has flown by and I am so impressed with how much these kiddos have grown! I cannot believe I am saying this, but your babies are ready for 5th grade and they are going to ROCK IT! I am going to miss them terribly and plan to enjoy these last few day with them.

I want to thank you for your patience and support.

Have a wonderful summer and please let me know if you need anything! Also, please keep in touch and let me know how our kiddos are doing in MS!
