This Week:
We were all about tens frames and sorting in multiple ways in math this week. Students enjoyed 10 frames puzzles, completed a tens frame matching activity and made a human tens frame. Kiddos also practiced their sorting skills with all sorts of things. We really focused on thinking about how we can sort the same collection of things in different ways.
In language arts we began our sound cabinet routine. Students brought in items that began with the letter of the week. We stretched all the sounds we heard in the name of the sound cabinet item and clapped all the syllables. Students also began building their reading stamina. We have a class goal of reading for 20 minutes uninterrupted. We will continue to build our reading stamina over the coming weeks. Sight words next week will be: can, at, on & my.
This week in social studies we wrapped up our focus on Thorpe Creek's high five behavior expectations. We created a class pledge and signed it, promising to do our best to show TCE high five behavior in our classroom and throughout the school. The high five behaviors that we have learned about are; respect, responsibility, safety, self-control and determination.
Sound Cabinet- Next week our letter is S.
NWEA Students participated in our 2nd round of NWEA assessments. This is an assessment done in the computer lab and students are assessed in both reading and math. They finished both sections and were such troopers. I'm so proud of their hard work and patience! Results from this assessment will be shared on Friday. I will look forward to discussing the results and my plans with you at our conference in October.

Discovery News:
Hello wonderful parents! This is Mrs. Foust with our news from Discovery. This week our rhyme was, “London Bridge.” Students participated in making bridges from various building materials and making their own ABC Bridge. For Social Skills, we discussed the importance of asking for help from others or a teacher when we get stuck. Ask your child to model the Think, Turn, Tell activity that we practiced in class. Next week we will investigate the “3 Little Kittens” rhyme.

Grandparents Day:
As you may already know, Grandparent’s Day is celebrated around the United States in the month of September. We would like to honor grandparents on Friday, September 25th by inviting them to TCE for a special Grandparent’s Day! The event will take place from 9:10-11:35, with each grade level hosting a specific time slot. During this special visit, the grandparents will get a chance to see your child’s classroom and do some memorable activities with your child. Below is the timeline for the days’ activities.
9:10-9:50 Kindergarten
9:35-10:15 3rd Grade
10:00-10:40 1st Grade
10:30-11:10 2nd Grade
10:55-11:35 4th Grade
As you can see there might be an open slot as you wait for another grade level. The PTO will be hosting a waiting room at TCE for that open time period. Refreshments will be served and student work will be on display. Due to the wonderful turn out, and the high number of students we have this year, we are requesting no visitors for lunch that day. Thank you for your understanding! We look forward to this special event!
Below is the link to the criminal background check and Anti- Bullying training. It must be complete before you come into school to volunteer or have lunch with your student.

The online school directory is now available to all families in Skyward. This year the directory is based on an opt-in model. Families must choose to show their contact information in order to be visible in the directory.
To opt-in, click on "My Account" in the upper right corner of your Family Access account. From there, check the boxes for the information you wish to make visible under the School Directory section and then Save. Families can make changes to this section anytime throughout the school year.
What to ask?
Have a kiddo that is reluctant to talk about what they did at school all day? Here are a couple questions to get the conversation rolling.
* What are the 3 ways you can read a book? Do you want to read one together?
* What did you sort this week? What are the different ways your sorted that?
* Who are your favorite friends in your class? What High Five behavior are they really great at showing?
