Pulaski Street School Newsletter
October
We appreciate everyone's flexibility as we adapt to unexpected changes this school year. We are hoping our remote days become limited in nature but it is extremely important that they are valued as instructional days. Please, make sure your child is logging into their google classroom AND completing their work from their teachers. If you have any concerns about your child's assignments please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher or the administrative team. We are all here to support you and your child.
Despite all of our unexpected changes this month, there continues to be wonderful learning happening both in school and at home for our students. Please check out some of the wonderful work our students are doing below. Thank you to our wonderful Pulaski staff who have adjusted to ever-changing circumstances while always keeping our kids best interests at heart. We were recently touched by a video, “I will be a hummingbird.” It reminded us of Pulaski.
We are a unique school, but we are brave, kind, and strong. We are facing a year like no other. We have developed plans based on our very best efforts - as the speaker in the story says, “I will do the best that I can.” We believe that of each member of our Pulaski family. We will all do the best that we can (parents, children, and staff). Please watch the video below and share it with your children.
As always, we thank you for your support. We don't know what the future will bring but we certainly look forward to facing it together.
With Gratitude,
Patrick K. Burke & Callan G. Lonergan

Honoring Garfield Langhorne
With that, the first Garfield M. Langhorn Jr. remembrance day was celebrated on Oct. 16. Throughout the day, students learned about Langhorn’s life and why he is a hero. Each class incorporated Langhorn’s story into their lessons, and during lunch periods, Principal Patrick Burke spoke to the students about Langhorn’s heroic actions and students shared their stories of family members who served their country.
The school also created a webpage in honor of Langhorn. It includes his life story and photos.
Langhorn graduated from the Riverhead School District when Pulaski Street served as the district’s high school. He was killed in action in Vietnam on Jan. 15, 1969 when he thew himself on a live grenade to save fellow wounded soldiers.

Student's Set Out to Solve the World's Problems
As part of a recent library project, Pulaski Street Elementary School students researched world issues they care about and created digital stories that they submitted to Nickelodeon’s and Britannica’s media channels and websites for a chance to be featured.
“The awareness that students can be part of a solution to our global problems is essential,” said library media specialist Amelia Estevez Creedon. “Students need to feel that they can affect change and are not powerless.”
The lesson also focused on the importance of reference material. “One of the most important lessons in library media is that media can be used responsibly to carry impactful messages to the world,” said Creedon. “I want my students to be responsible citizens and participate in a society in an active and productive manner.”
