7th Grade ELAR
We kicked off the 1st nine weeks with our Unit Taking Action and read many stories and articles that focused on qualities need to overcome and rise up to face difficulties. Students were emerged into the lives and situations of characters and people who used courage and determination to beat these obstacles. They were able to produce literary analysis essays, one pagers, short constructed responses and also research/inquiry. AAC classes were able to complete research on authors of their favorite text in the series and research a place of wonder, travel to that location, and then produce correspondence to a classmate highlighting their research of their findings.
We are taking our talents for our next unit which is Reality Check. The students will discover what is real and what is not by focusing on various genres, informational writing, answering text dependent questions, starting book club and completing novel projects!
8th Grade ELAR
8th Grade ELAR has officially launched the “Thrill of Horror” unit. Our Essential Question is “Why Do We Sometimes Like to Feel Frightened? We will read a short story by Edgar Allan Poe to kick off our unit. Students will then read Tell-Tale Heart, one of Edgar Allan Poe’s iconic pieces told by an unnamed narrator who tries to convince the reader of his sanity and innocence. Students are able to apply close reading and inferencing strategies to get to the bottom of the mystery in the story. Following this, students will begin their Phobia Projects where they have student choice and get to apply research and presentation skills. The Thrill of Horror unit is definitely one of the student favorites in 8th grade! Swing by any of the 8th grade ELAR classrooms to view some of the upcoming Phobia projects, if you are brave enough!
8th Grade Math
In math we have just finished our unit on Linear Relationships & Slope and will be starting our new unit on Linear functions. Looking at overall student performance since the start of school, tutorials are strongly encouraged and recommended to ensure our warriors are successful.
Our IReady weekly requirements have officially begun. Parents, please encourage your student to log into IReady for at least 45 minutes a week to insure they are meeting their classroom requirements. Students will be graded on their performance in IReady each 9 weeks.
As we transition into the 2nd 9 weeks grading period, supplies such as glue and pencils are getting low. Please be sure your student has the necessary supplies to be successful in class.
Science Grade 7 will focus on life science with an integration of biology, earth science and chemistry.

The 8th Social Studies Department will have our second CBA on Tuesday October 17th covering the Revolutionary War Unit. You should have received the second nine weeks Vocabulary List. We will continue to focus on Vocabulary by giving weekly vocabulary quizzes. Check point quizzes have already started to review STAAR like assessments questions and practicing testing strategies.
The Albright Library staff would like to encourage you to take some time to look through the Alief HUB with your student! There are many great resources available free for all of our Alief students. The Destiny Discover app provides students the ability to search our physical library catalog and put books on hold as well as access to hundreds of digital e-books they can read right from their device!
The Digital Resources folder has many great sites as well, many provided through our partnership with the Houston Public Library! In addition to electronic and audio books, students (and families) can also view streaming television and movies, music, language courses, tutoring and more all with one log-in! Please see the graphic below for more info on how to access all of these great resources!
Students are expected to come to school every day with their 1:1 device, the charger, the case, and personal wired headphones (no AirPods). Devices should be charged the night before to ensure a successful day in class. There are many students who have not received their devices yet. This may be because the $20 tech fee has not been paid or the 1:1 Agreement form has not been received. If your child is planning to use their own device, a 1:1 Agreement form stating that they decline, and BYOD is applied is still needed on record.
Students who do not have a 1:1 device may attend Open Lab 176 (8:05 AM - 8:30 AM) to be able to catch up on any missing assignments. Students will need to have a permanent ID to enter. Open Lab is NOT available for gaming purposes and is first come, first serve only.
