January is Glaucoma Awareness Month
What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve in your eye, which carries information from the eye to the brain – allowing you to see clearly. It occurs when fluid builds up in your eye, increasing the eye’s pressure. This increase in pressure slowly damages the millions of fibers that make up your eye’s optic nerve.
Read the attached article below for more information on glaucoma and your eye health.
Simplifying How to be Healthy!
Get the Goods
A healthy lifestyle is comprised of several components. In the new recipe book created by Shari and Doug Schmidt, Eat More Plants Love, they write about "The 5 Goods". Based on research and science that is available, here are the 5 things you should try to obtain daily to live a happy, healthy life.
The 5 Goods
Good Food: A whole food plant based diet gives your body all the nutrients it needs to not just live, but thrive. It gives you everything you need (and more) and can heal many of the chronic diseases plaguing us. Nourish your body with whole foods like fruit, vegetables, grains and legumes.
Good Movement: However you like to move, whether it is walking, doing a spin class, swimming or just walking the dog, get out and move everyday. It doesn't have to be a massive amount just get off the couch and get those joints working.
Good Rest: Many of us are functioning on too little sleep. It doesn't take much to make us sleep deprived and sleep deprivation affects our mood. There are numerous studies demonstrating that sleep deprivation affects many automatic bodily processes, especially our immune system, which means that sleeplessness can result in illness. Research also suggests that the food we eat can affect how well we sleep and your sleep patterns can affect your dietary choices.
Good Mood: Lack of sleep, anxiety and stress, all affect our mood. Eating a poor diet can directly affect the brain and the neuro-transmitters that help regulate your mood. By doing many of the "Good" above, your mood will be elevated. If you are in a bad mood, don't use food to change it. Instead find an activity that you enjoy to help change your mood. Lean on those supportive family and friends, which leads us to number 5.
Good Friends/Tribe: In the ground-breaking study with National Geographic and in his book, The Blue Zones, Dan Buettner discovered that there are certain regions in the world where people live long healthy lives. One of the traits common among these places is community involvement. Rely on family and friends who support you. In the Blue Zones, people also have a purpose. They have a reason to live and feel needed. Find your tribe and your purpose.
