Elsie Rogers Express
November 2017
Fall Greetings
Thank you families for coming out to our 2nd Monster Mash dance on October 20. This season is a "JOYOUS" time to live vicariously through children. The costumes were fantastic as well as the pumpkins created by families.
Gratitude is also extended to our fabulous PTO for hosting the wonderful dads and dudes in our students' lives. Our Donuts for Dads and Other Deserving Dudes was very well attended. We packed the gym, which I love to see.
Finally, the month of November is a beautiful time to reflect upon our many blessings. One thing I am truly thankful for is the opportunity to watch your children grow every day. They are each a blessing in my book!!
Happy Fall~

November Life Skill Focus
Manner #1 - When asking for something, say "Please."
Manner #2 - When receiving something or when someone helps you, say "Thank you."
Manner #3 - Do not interrupt grown-ups who are speaking with each other unless there is an emergency. If you do need to get somebody's attention right away, the phrase "excuse me" is the most polite way for you to enter the conversation
Manner #4 - Do not comment on other people's physical characteristics unless, of course, it's to compliment them.
Manner #5 - When you have spent time at your friend's house, remember to thank his or her parents for having you over and for the good time you had.
Manner #6 - Knock on closed doors -- and wait to see if there's a response -- before entering.
Manner #7 - Don't call people mean names. Do not make fun of anyone for any reason.
Manner #8 - If you bump into somebody, immediately say "Excuse me."
Manner #9 - Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
Manner #10 - As you walk through a door, look to see if you can hold it open for someone else.
Manner #11 - When an adult asks you for a favor, do it without grumbling and with a smile.
Manner #12 - Clean up after yourself.
Manner #13 - Say a heartfelt "I am sorry" if your hurt someone or their feelings.
Table Manners #14- Use eating utensils properly. If you are unsure how to do so, ask your parents to teach you or watch what adults do. Keep a napkin on your lap; use it to wipe your mouth when necessary. Don't reach for things at the table; ask to have them passed. Chew with your mouth closed. Do not talk with food in your mouth.

High Ability Identification
In accordance with the Indiana high ability law, we are required to have an identification process in place to identify students of high ability in the general intellectual and specific academic domains. We identify students who have high ability in language arts and/or math.
Every kindergartener, second and fifth grader who has not been previously identified in a subject area is considered for high ability identification.
Testing for the high ability identification process will begin in November and December.
Learn more about our identification procedures by visiting our high ability website at https://www.phmschools.org/saturday-enrichment-and-high-ability-programs.

Great Family Movie Coming Your Way!!!
At the beginning of the school year I read the picture book version of Wonder by Raquel J. Palacio to all the classes at Elsie Rogers. I told the children that the movie would be coming out in November. Well, November 17 is the day. I highly recommend making this a family outing! The story line is outstanding - WONDER tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time. This is a lesson in kindness and acceptance at its finest.
