Causes of the American Revolution
1763-1776
The American Revolution is all the English colonies fighting for there independence against the British and founded the United States of America. Some social causes of the American Revolution was people explored the colonies for religous freedom and leave the monarchy of the British. Some of the important economic policies that led to the American Revolution was the Stamp Act and the Tea Act and much more. I do think colonist were justified in declaring independence because they where all working together.
Navigation Acts
The Navigation Acts where efforts to put the theory of Mercantilism into actual practice. Two rules where trading with other colonies was only to be conducted with English or colonial ships. The other rule is that Tabacco was not to be sent away anywhere else. The Sugar Act made people mad mostly because they where forced to buy more expensive sugar. The most significant result of the Navigation Acts upon American history was a stifling of colonial manufacturing.
The Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 was after the the French and Indian war. It was a line across the Appalachian mountains that King George III issued to control the conflict and keep it away. The colonist became mad with this line because they felt they where stuck and could not settle where they wanted to.
The Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was a tax that taxed anything printed on paper by requiring colonist to buy a stamp or seal for paper products. Parliament raised these funds to protect the colonies and pay the debt of the French and Indian war. Samuel Adams began the Committees of Correspondence to contact other towns about British taxes. Samuel Adams started the Sons of Liberty, it was a group of men that protested British policies and at times had to use violence. Benjamin Franklin protested to end the boycott, King George had no other choice to repeal the Stamp Act.
Quartering Act
After the Stamp Act protests, Britain sent even more troops to keep order in the colonies. Due to the social and political problems that took place after the Stamp Act. After this lead to the Quartering Act of 1765, this meant people had to help soldiers and feed them. Two major issues colonist had was one, the people did not like random soldiers in there houses and the second was that having a soldier was costly. They changed that to where they would pay some of the soldiers costs.
Townshend Acts
The Townshend acts taxed tea, glass, paper and other items this was used to pay for military cost. The daughters of liberty made there own cloth instead of purchasing British goods. In 1770 the protest worked and parliament repealed most of the taxes, but left the tax on tea. The Sons of Liberty responded with violence.
Boston Massacre
Anger and Tension continued to grow as the British sent more soldiers to Boston after the colonist resisted the taxes. The tension exploded on March 5,1770. A colonist started to stir up a soldier and the anger spread through the whole mob and things where thrown this lead to soldiers shooting. This lead to 5 colonist being killed. Later it was branded the Boston Massacre. Samuel Adams decided to use this as Prapoganda.
Tea Act and Boston Tea Party
In 1773 parliment passed the Tea Act. This made the price of tea much lower but colonist where still unhappy because they where forced to pay import taxes to the British. This resulted in riot and people jumped the boat like the Sons of Liberty and through of the tea.
Coercive Act
The colonist called this the Intolerable acts because they were so harsh. These efforts where to keep the colonist from planning other attacks. These laws stoped all trade between Boston and Britian.
