Perseverance
November comes and November goes
With the last red berries and the first white snows.
With night coming early and dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket and frost by the gate.
The fires burn and the kettle sings,
And earth sinks to rest until next Spring.
~Clyde Watson
As the weather turns cold and the workload increases, November is often a difficult month for students. With that in mind, our focus this month is perseverance. Terry Fox is our role model. Terry had many obstacles in his way, but he demonstrated great perseverance. We will be setting goals and trying to stick with them even when faced with challenges.
November 11
On Friday, November 11, there will be a Remembrance Day assembly at 10:45 a.m. in the Gym. The choirs and orchestra will be performing. Parents are welcome to join us for the assembly.
Star Student
We will soon start with our Star Student routine. Each week, one student will be in the spotlight. The Star Student will bring home a sharing sack with a journal and instructions in it. He/she will also prepare a Google Slide presentation about himself/herself to present to the class. There will also be 15 Minutes of Fame, a time to share a special talent, skill or hobby. Parents or grandparents are invited to send in a letter to the class about your child. Please check the class website to find out the date of your child's Star Student week.
Wish Tree
The holiday season is an opportunity for the Ryerson community to share with children who are less fortunate. Families are invited to take a star from our wish tree and purchase a gift for a needy child. Stars will be available starting November 21. They can be signed out in the library. If you are unable to come to the school personally to get a star, but would like your child to bring one home, please send a note in the planner and we will help your child sign out a star.
Curriculum Corner
Language
We will be reading Myths and Legends from different civilizations. In writing our focus will be on descriptive narrative writing. This will tie in nicely with our study of Ancient Civilzations in Social Studies. Later this month, students will be working on a group research project on a specific civilization.
Math
We will continue with Number Sense strand started in late October. We will be rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. We will also begin learning about decimals and we will develop our operational skills with whole numbers and decimals.
