Alka Seltzer Rockets and Syringes
Third graders explored properties of gases with a few different investigations. Using syringes, students learned about pressure and compression by “air wrestling”, a game where two people both push at the same time and discovering “pop-off” which launched one plunger out of it’s barrel.
Students then tried adding different combinations of alka seltzer tablets and water to launch a film canister. Students learned that the cap on the film canister is forced off due to the fizzy gas (carbon dioxide) created in the film canister. They recognized that a chemical reaction took place when the fizzy tablet was added to the water and the buildup of gas caused pressure inside the canister.
FOURTH GRADE
Gingerbread Breakout EDU
4th grade students participated in a Gingerbread themed Breakout EDU to practice team building skills. Students worked together in small groups to piece together each clue to unlock the locks on their box. Once inside, they found edible gingerbread men to enjoy!
Introduction to Google Sites: Energy Websites
FIFTH GRADE
Extracting DNA from Strawberries
5th graders extracted DNA from strawberries by creating a DNA extraction liquid with detergent, salt and water. After mixing crushed strawberries with the DNA extraction liquid, students then poured the mixture into a filter. They then added cold rubbing alcohol to the remaining liquid. Within a few seconds, the DNA (white cloudy) appeared in the top layer of our alcohol and strawberry mixture. Students also created a DNA candy molecule using twizzlers and colored marshmallows.
