Principal's Corner by Jennifer Updike
Spring is right around the corner which means we are rounding third and heading to the end of another wonderful school year! It is such a delight being your child’s principal. I love researching and exploring new and innovative ways to educate your child. I also love making sure our students want to come to school and feel like they are a part of close knit learning community. One of the ways we like to encourage community is our annual carnival! Our carnival will be March 16th from 12-3 at CMES. The cost is only 5 dollars per child and they can play all the games and earn prizes they want. There will also be food for an additional cost, and due to a generous donation from a community member, Cincinnati Circus entertainers and games will be here again! Come join the fun and community for a guaranteed great time!!
State testing is coming up for our 3rd-5th grade students. All 3rd-5th grade will take an ELA test in two sections on March 27th and 28th and a state math test on April 3rd and 4th. We will finish up with 5th grade only science test on April 10th and 11th. We are confident our students will excel on these tests due to the personalized, data driven instruction they have received on a daily basis. Please just encourage a growth mindset, get a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast. We will take care of the rest!
Finally, some new innovative changes are coming to CMES for the 2019-2020 school year.

We will be transitioning to trimester report cards instead of quarters. This decision was based on research from our building leadership team and surveying the community. The main reason is that our first quarter report cards are generally not a reflection of your child’s true progress as we have only had a few instructional weeks with your child. The first several weeks of the school year are spent getting to know your child and their needs and then applying personalized instruction. Trimesters allows more time to accurately evaluate your child's learning progress. Please see the research below and let me know if you have any questions. Our building leadership team will continue to discuss and improve our communication on your child’s learning progress for the 2019-2020 school year. For example, there are some updated apps that allow your child to have their own personal learning portfolio. The student and the teacher can privately share your child’s progress and accomplishments directly to your phone or email. Instead of waiting until the end of the week or even the quarter you will have direct information right at your fingertips on a regular basis so you can immediately work with your child or praise their growth. If you have any suggestions, please let me or your child’s teacher know.

The teachers and administration will begin working on class lists for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year. We plan on having our transition day in May. The exact date is to be determined. This was a success for our students, teachers and parents. The transition day alleviated a lot of anxiety for our students getting to meet and greet their new teacher.
