Early Life

"Derek Sanderson Jeter was born on June 26, 1974, in Pequannok, New Jersey, to Charles and Dorothy Jeter. The Jeter family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, when he was four years old so that Jeter's father could pursue a PhD in psychology. Despite growing up in Michigan, Jeter was a Yankee fan, a fact he attributed to the influence of his maternal grandmother in New Jersey. "Contemporary Black Biography, December 2, 2011

Getting Involved

In February of 2001 he signed a 10 year contract for $189 million. He said that he was never tempted to test free agency. He says "I never intended to play elsewhere and to be honest with you, I never intended to look elsewhere."

Choices and results

He was named the Yankees' captain, one of only 11 players to hold that honor. He received the Henry Aaron Award as the best batter in the American League and the Roberto Clemente Award for his community involvement; and he was named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year, the first Yankee ever granted that honor.

In His Words

"My heroes, my dreams, and my future lay in Yankee Stadium. And they can't take that away from me." Derek Jeter

"We just want to win. That's the bottom line. I think a lot of times people may become content with one championship or a little bit of success, but we don't really reflect on what we've done in the past. We focus on the present." Derek Jeter

Words For Him

"Jeter's career has been ridiculously long, misleadingly long, four times longer than the average baseball player's." ESPN

Legacy

"For me, when I was a kid, volunteering was the last thing I was thinking about. When I see kids doing it now, it amazes me. It's very impressive, it gives them something productive to do as opposed to getting in trouble. For them to take time out at such a young age is remarkable. I think all kids should take a little time out to volunteer." Derek Jeter
