Building Self-Esteem in Kids
Self-esteem is how we feel, how we value, and how we perceive ourselves. It is impacted by the people in our lives, our beliefs, and our experiences. Learning the acceptance of who we are can begin at a very young age. But how can we build self-esteem in our kids?
The earlier we start teaching children how to love themselves, the stronger their self-esteem will be as they grow older. A person’s self-esteem will never be perfect, but it’s the journey of the ups and downs and learning to accept and love who you are that makes it all worth it.
We can build self-esteem in children by celebrating successes, normalizing mistakes, accepting differences, and sharing feelings in family conversations. Check out these 5 different ways to build self-esteem in kids from Big Life Journal below.
Practice Social Media Mindfulness!
Social media can be a very powerful tool for shaping a student’s self-image and confidence, as well as his or her opinions and perceptions about life and the world. It can have an enormous impact on a student’s mental health.
One way to use social media in a healthy way is to be intentional about what you are exposing yourself to online and practice “connecting” instead of “comparing”. Try to limit your feed to people, places and things that bring you joy. Consider limiting the number of people you follow to only those who are close to you, make you feel good, and will be there for you when you need them. Remember that a lot of content on social media is designed to make you react and can represent lifestyles and images that are unattainable or that don’t even exist in real life! Using social media to make genuine connections can help keep you from falling into the trap of comparing yourself to unrealistic standards.
Slow down a little and ask yourself: Am I connecting or comparing?
Technology and Social Media Statistics to Consider
Below are some statistics of teenager use of technology. How does this align with your observations of your children.? What are the positive and negative aspects of the increase of technology use?
Non-school related screen time among teenagers doubled from pre-pandemic estimates of 3.8 hours per day up to 7.7 hours (Source: Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics)
46% of teens report being online almost constantly (Source: Pew Research)
34% of US teens picked Snapchat as their favorite social media network in the fall of 2020 and ranked TikTok 2nd at 29%. (Source: Statista)
An average of 5+ billion snaps are created every day (Source: Snap, Inc.)
