Big picture

Supporting Our Students To Be Independent

As we continue this journey together, here are tips that families have shared on the Family JamBoard for successful Distance Learning and building student agency.....

1) Make a list of what is being done. Using the teacher's list as a guide, then breaking it down or chunking it to align with the family schedule. Be intentional about adding breaks that allow the student to be off of the screen as well as have voice and choice.

2) Be clear of the learning objective/goal. If students are being asked to journal and struggling with the topic, ask the student to write on a topic of choice, make a list, write a conversation about the topic. Support the idea of practicing getting her thoughts out in words.

3) Communicate with the teacher if there is uncertainty. The teachers prefer hearing from the student/family for clarification and understanding. If there is a challenging assignment, uncertainty of directions, support your child to create a communication. In the process, the child may remember where to go for an assignment, consider calling a classmate, or emotionally calm down to allow the ideas to settle in her mind.

Student agency,
or owning my learning, refers to the level of autonomy and power that a student experiences in the learning environment. Student voice and agency are intrinsically linked. Agency gives students the power to direct and take responsibility for their learning, creating independent and self-regulating learners.
