Hoboken High School Weekly Update
November 23, 2022
Congratulations to Mr. Kinnear and his theater department on an amazing production of Urinetown. The cast was fabulous, and the audience was so amazed at the high end production by the students under the direction of Mr. Kinnear. Now everyone can get some well deserved rest!
Mr. Lebegue, Feline Dirkx and Kai Hultstrom made their way to Florida this week for the launch of SpaceX CRS - 18, which carries Feline and Kai's SSEP project to the International Space Station. Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of their control, the launch was delayed until after Thanksgiving. They will have the opportunity to watch the launch live via live stream.
After reviewing the first marking period grades, we will be putting into place some initiatives that will assist any student who needs extra help. Once we identify the students, we will set up a meeting with the parent to provide extra time in our academic support center. In addition, any student that has missing assignments during any given week, will be assigned to the academic support center from 3:00 - 4:00 Monday through Friday, until all assignments are completed. Please understand we are putting this in place to assist your child and ensure they have a successful second marking period.
During the holiday season, we like to give back. Please see the flyer below about our Winter Giving Drive.
I hope everyone has a very Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving and enjoys time spent with family and friends.
All the best,
Ms. Picc
Uniform Policy
Most importantly, we have eliminated hooded apparel from our policy. This is a security measure as well as an academic measure. We have 3/4 fleece sweatshirts available at HHS for students who run cold during the school day.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.
Ms. Picc
Rachel’s Challenge Helping Schools Become Safer, More Connected
Hoboken High School is working with Rachel’s Challenge to stimulate academic achievement and social-emotional learning by focusing on the connection between students, faculty and staff. Using the remarkable story of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School tragedy, Rachel’s Challenge awakens individual hope and purpose, which in turn promotes safer, more connected school communities. A Rachel’s Challenge staff member will share Rachel’s story with the entire community on 11-30-2022 at 5:30 PM at Hoboken High School
Dr. Robert Marzano, respected education researcher and author states, “Rachel’s Challenge is the most powerful intervention I have seen in 40 years of working in education.” Rachel’s story unlocks the desire for change. Then, its programs come alongside the existing efforts of the school to sustain a culture where harassment, violence and self-harm are reduced; where teachers are free to teach and students are empowered to learn.
An independent study conducted by Multi-Dimensional Education, LLC, a nationally recognized educational program evaluator, found that, “Schools implementing Rachel’s Challenge with fidelity achieved statistically significant gains in community engagement, faculty/student relationships, leadership potential, and school climate; along with a reduction in bullying behavior.”
Using age-appropriate programming for K-12, Rachel’s Challenge schools have reported up to 84% reductions in disciplinary referrals. As many as 150 suicides are averted annually, as reported by students themselves. In a pre- and post-attitudinal survey of 9,881 students from socioeconomically and demographically diverse schools across the US and Canada, respondents reported a 282% increase in the number of students feeling safe at school after participating in Rachel Challenge.
In just over two decades of social-emotional and mental health training, Rachel’s Challenge has reached over 30 million students, educators, and community members. Rachel’s Challenge continues to work hard to turn the ideals of kindness and compassion into actionable strategies that help promote a safe and productive learning environment.

Future Collegiate Student Athlete Academy
The Hoboken High School Athletic Department is launching a new academy for student athletes. The Future Collegiate Student Athlete Academy (FCSAA) was established to assist high school students who are interested in continuing their athletic pursuits while furthering their education at the next level.
The FCSAA will bond Hoboken High School’s student athletes and their families together, regardless of the sport, with a series of informational dinner sessions that will outline the eligibility, recruitment, scholarship and selection processes associated with NCAA programs across the country. Participants will explore the differences between NCAA Division I, II, and III programs and speak with Hoboken High School graduates who are playing or have played sports at the college level.
All prospective NCAA student athletes from Hoboken High School are invited to participate in the Future Collegiate Student Athlete Academy (FCSAA). In addition, 8th grade students from Hoboken Middle School and their parents are also invited to attend each of the informational sessions in order to get a head start on the collegiate athletics process.
Each session will be from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM in the Hoboken High School Cafeteria.
Dinner will be served at each event.
