THANK YOU
What an amazing community we have supporting our Jackson Jaguars!!! The PTA auction was a huge success thanks to all of you who helped in all ways - gathering items, making phone calls, decorating, coordinating, and purchasing. The night was so fun and proved once again just how much the students mean to the community!
Amounts Raised
Our grand total for the auction is $63,682.80 of which $13,474 will be used to buy new chrome-based pcs for the computer lab and $3832.01 will go to the Jackson Outdoor Equipment and Grounds fund (which will help with the new playground). The remaining money after expenses will fund our programs and events for next year. WOW!
Special thanks to the PTA, Trang Jensen, Amy Meiers, Kerry Stock, and the auction committee!!

In Search Of . . .
Kindergarteners are in need of small, soft wood scraps for the construction center. They would also take small non-working appliances (no computers or screens) for take-apart center. The more screws to remove, the better!

OBOB Winners - Their Story
Once upon a time, there was a group of five girls. There names were Erica, Josie, Marie, Mia, and Sayuri. When their noses were not buried in a good book, they could found in Jackson Academy. They came together in their shared love of books to form an Oregon Battle of the Books team called The Weirdos. They had a perilous journey ahead of them.
To prepare for battle, there were wonderful books to read. Instead of dividing the books up to read, the Weirdos developed their winning strategy. Every team member read all sixteen books at least once. Next, they had to battle their own Jackson school mates. The won five battles, including an exciting final battle in the library. The Weirdos earned the right to represent Jackson at the Oregon Battle of the Books regional tournament.
For two weeks, the Weirdos practiced almost every day. They poured over book pages. They did practice battle after practice battle against each other in the library. They chose their battle uniform. They did everything they could to prepare. The five girls wanted to make Jackson Elementary School proud.
Regional tournament day finally came. On a rainy Saturday, March 11, the Weirdos and their families gathered at the Health and Science School in Beaverton. The school was filled with 75 different OBOB teams.
The preliminary round of the tournament divided the teams into 25 pools of three teams each. At this stage, the goal was to earn as many points as possible. Wins and losses did not count. The 16 teams with the highest number of points would go on the single elimination round of the tournament.
Representing Jackson, the Weirdos first battled a team from Yankton Arthur. They won decisively 53-20. Next, they battled Metzger in a tighter battle winning 43-32.
Then the waiting began. With fingers crossed, they waited anxiously in the cafeteria. Would the 96 points The Weirdos earned would be enough to make it into the single elimination rounds? Hundreds of people gathered in the cafeteria awaiting the results, which were at least 30 minutes late in being announced. We knew it must be close.
Finally, an announcement was made. We listened as school names were announced. Jackson was not called. The team was disappointed. But wait, didn’t they announce only 15 (and not 16) teams?!? The announcers told teams whose name had not been called to leave. Many disappointed teams were gathering to leave and already heading out the door.
The Weirdos decided to investigate further. Whether or not they were the final 16th team, they wanted to make sure that 16 teams made it to the next round. They spoke to the announcer and asked why 15 and not 16 teams were announced.
Suddenly, the announced yelled “STOP” into the microphone. “There has been a mistake. One more team will make it to the next round. We will announce the name in a few minutes.” Stunned, everyone returned to the cafeteria. Triumphant that disaster was averted, the Weirdos began awaiting again to see if they might be the final team to make it to the next round. And… they were!!! Jackson Elementary was in the top 16.
First, they battled a team from Otto Peterson. After the first half of the battle, the teams were tied 20-20. Both teams answered all the questions correctly. In the second part of battle, the Weirdos took the lead. They answered all their own questions correctly and stole two questions from the other team. They won 50-30.
They were now in the top eight. The top four teams would be representing the region at the state tournament. If they won, they would go to state. Next up, they faced Oak Hills. This battle was neck and neck. In the end, the girls lost by a mere 1 point 36-37. The Oak Hills team went on to win the whole tournament!
Congratulations to the Weirdos for making Jackson Elementary School proud.

Class Assignment Requests
Each spring, the Jackson staff accomplishes the important task of placing students into classes for the next school year. Since these placement decisions must be based upon a variety of educational and social factors, several aspects are considered including input from the current classroom teacher and principal, academic performance, and behavior history. School staff devotes considerable thought, time and energy to this task. In the process we work hard to achieve a “good match” between child and teacher, placing each student in a classroom for optimum success while creating educationally effective classes.
We value your input on your child and your beliefs about their optimal learning environment. We will do our best to honor your requests and will use the input you give us to help inform our process. To maintain equity and balanced classes as well as creating maximum flexibility as we assign teachers to classrooms, we will not be accepting requests for specific teachers. Please keep in mind that, as in prior years, blended classrooms can be a regular part of class configurations at Jackson.
We invite your input, and encourage you to use the form available in the office to provide information regarding placement of your child. Though their input is valued, teachers are not responsible for class placement so please complete a form if you would like to make any requests. After June 1, we will not be able to factor in requests.
