Copyright or Copy-wrong?
A Few Reminders About Movie Use in the Classroom
To Show or Not to Show....That is the question
As we near the end of the first semester, plans are being made for classroom holiday parties. Please keep in mind these copyright rules for classroom use.
To Show:
- If your district has paid for Movie Licensing USA, you may select from the movies that fall under their licensing and not worry about copyright infringement.
- You may show clips from a movie IF it supports concepts that have been discussed in your classroom and appear in your curriculum. This does not give you permission to show the entire movie. (i.e. watching all of "Schindler's List" because you studied Holocaust camps)
Not To Show:
Copyright infringement occurs when:
- You sign into your personal Netflix/Hulu/Prime account and show a movie in class
- You bring a personal movie DVD into class and show it
- You rent a movie DVD and show it in class
There are other "Not To" items that can be added to this list. These are the most commonly practiced "Not Tos".
Does My District Have Movie Licensing USA?
Movie Licensing USA is acquired from the ESUCC Marketplace. Please check with district office personnel responsible for making COOP purchases to see if your building has the proper licensing.
