Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place this Thursday, Sept. 22nd & next Tuesday, Sept. 27th. I have most of you scheduled for a time slot. If you do not yet have a time scheduled with me, please double check the schedule I sent out last week (I'll send another reminder in the next day or two). I will try to be as efficient as possible sharing information about your child's progress so far this school year. Please don't hesitate to bring your own questions. I will do my very best to stick to our 15 minute time slot (and I will need your help with this, as well :)), however, please be prepared for possible delays by the end of the evening this Thursday, as that is when most of my meetings are scheduled. I look forward to meeting with all of you!

Hawk-A-Walk-A-Thon

This year's annual PTO Hawk-A-Walk-A-Thon will take place on Friday, September 30th. It's not too late to send in packets! Right now our class is in a close 2nd PLACE for 3rd grade :). This is PTO's #1 fundraiser and it is a great way to support our students and enrich their learning. Some of the "extras" PTO provides for our students include enrichment programs, school convocations, assistance with field trips, school/classroom supplies, and MUCH more! Thank you in advance for your support with this event.

This year, online donations will be accepted. It is a very quick and easy process. Please use the following link:

Math Workshop

We will continue our work in Unit 2 this week with addition of 2 and 3 digit numbers with regrouping. We will work on both traditional method (the way all of us parents/teachers most likely learned) and also partial sums method. I will try and remind students to bring home their math reference books when we are working on methods that may be unfamiliar to you. Please remember, the reason we expose them to different methods is emphasize that there is more than one way to solve most problems. Some children gravitate toward one method, while others gravitate toward another. Knowing more than one way to solve a problem is also a great way to check math work. One of our biggest challenges so far seems to be double checking work and asking, "does my answer make sense and how do I know?". We will continue to work on this in class. It is a simple way you can help at home, too!

Reader's & Writer's Workshop

Last week in Reader's Workshop, we started learning about strategies we can use to monitoring our comprehension. We talked about some of the things we can do when the mental movie we create in our minds becomes fuzzy. We will continue to discuss monitoring our reading and learn to "stop, think, and react" to the text on a regular basis in order to ensure we are gaining deep meaning from what we read.

In Writer's Workshop, we will learn how to use a narrative writing checklist to evaluate our writing and make sure we are remembering to include important elements in our personal narrative writing. We will start putting all of the pieces together from previous mini-lessons and start writing our discovery drafts.
