All about Summer Reading!

Summer 2021

Welcome to the LAST Small Virtual Library of the 2020-21 school year! I hope you have enjoyed them as much as I have enjoyed creating them each week.

This Small Virtual Library is all about summer reading to help you stay entertained and keep your brain engaged!

Need something before we leave for summer break? Contact me via email (you will find my contact info at the bottom of the Smore.) I would love to help you find resources for summer reading or answer any questions you might have!

Be sure you check the ebook info page for how to access books ALL SUMMER and the Sora usernames and passwords.

General Summer Reading Info

Why should we read over the summer?

What "they" say: Studies show that students who participated in summer reading programs also demonstrated higher reading achievement than students who did not participate. The study suggests that children who participate in summer reading programs increased their reading skills, motivation, confidence, and enjoyment.

What you need to know: reading SHOULD be an enjoyable way for you to be entertained while engaging your brain in ways that video games, TV, movies, videos (I'm looking at you TikTok and YouTube), even audio books, cannot. If you're not enjoying reading, you haven't found the right book. You don't have to follow a program or read for prizes, just READ!

Austin Public Library Summer Reading Programing

Youth Program ages 5-12

Join Austin Public Library for a summer of FUN! Kids can choose from lots of free, at-home activities during summer break. We know that kids learn best when they are having fun so our staff has developed a series of programs that include learning experiences that focus on youth interests and that build skills and confidence. You’ll see them working on problem solving, physical play, creativity, planning, reading, writing skills, and just getting outdoors to enjoy beautiful Austin. Get ready to play, laugh, and learn together all summer long.

Teen Program ages 13-18

Grab a summer adventure logbook at any location and take a journey of self-discovery. Join our virtual, teen-led Social Hours to play games and meet new friends. Submit your creative works to our teen magazine, ATXyz. And stop by any location to pick up a free book that’s yours to keep. It’s all happening this June through July. See you this summer!

Scholastic's Summer Reading

Scholastic has a new platform for summer reading called Home Base. Students can read books online for free, track their reading, and earn books to be donated to areas of need in the US.

Half Price Books "Feed Your Brain" Summer Reading Program

The program has not yet been updated with the reading log but you can find suggested summer reads here. In the past, they have had weekly giveaways and you can earn Bookworm Bucks to be used at HPB for your reading log minutes.
