FAC Weekly Update

March 2, 2021

Good Morning, Fine Arts Center Family

I hope that you had a wonderful week. Believe it or not, there are just 11 weeks of instruction remaining for our underclassmen and 9 weeks for our seniors. We are working hard to make these moments memorable!

Here is the latest from the halls of the Fine Arts Center...

This Week's Student Leadership Lesson

Getting People to Listen

“If someone wants to talk a lot, then listen. There is no better cure for a person who wants to talk a lot than letting them get their thoughts out of their head. Let them say what they want to say. When they have nothing left, you will be able to make your point.

This is also good because as they unload all their ideas, you now know not only everything you know, you also know everything they know. Armed with this knowledge, you can assess their ideas. You can formulate counterpoints or recommendations around their thoughts.

The less you talk, the more people listen. Don't waste your words. Let other people do that; instead, speak with poignancy and power."

Jocko Willink, "Leadership Strategy and Tactics," pgs. 293-294.

Online Embedded Course Offerings - For the 2021-2022 School Year

Fine Arts Center students may have room in their schedule to take one or more of the below courses through the Greenville County Virtual Program (not to be mistaken with GCS Virtual, which is in place of in-person instruction at the GCS High School). • U.S. History (Yearlong)
  • Government and Economics (Yearlong, 1 semester each)

Look for an email from Ms. Rhyne in the next few weeks to sign up for these courses for next year. If you have any questions before then, please email krhyne@greenville.k12.sc.us.

Applicants must be attending or planning to enroll in an accredited United States college or university during the upcoming academic year, be in good academic standing, and planning to or currently pursuing an arts-related major or minor. Summer Intensive Programs - Request for Financial Support

The FAC Partners have earmarked $10,000 to support students in grades 9-11 who have been accepted into Summer Intensive Programs for their area of study at the FAC. Students who apply for financial assistance must be committed to attending the FAC next year. Recipients will be chosen first by financial need (as determined by P.I.P. status) and then by merit (Grade Point Average), with teacher input into the student's performance also being a factor. You will need to provide proof of acceptance into the program/camp (email or hard copy) along with the submission of the form. The form is due April 23, 2021, and can be accessed at the following link - https://forms.gle/wunVFjRdEX72bob69.

Please note - the form should be completed by the student via their GCS Google Account. Call or email us with any questions.

Congratulations to Lillian Mozie!

Congratulations to 9th Grader Lillian Mozie (Dance) on being accepted into the prestigious Julliard Dance Online Experience! This summer program features instruction from world-class dance instructors, offered this year through a virtual learning environment. Way to go, Lilly!
Parent Engagement Committee - thank you to all who attended our Zoom meeting on February 2, 2021. If you missed the meeting but are interested in being a part of the FAC Parent Guild, where you can have an active role in supporting our students and school, please email our Parent Engagement Committee Co-Chairs:

Wish List - FAC Equipment

Based on feedback from the Parent Guild meeting, I am sharing with you a working document that serves as our Wish List. Please click on the following link to access the list: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Wr_aHAWv3NUTw1e3Oqzb8lUAs6u3zRNXdUPiU24c7Es/edit?usp=sharing.

GCS provides us with a generous budget, but as a pre-professional training ground for aspiring artists, at times we will need to augment what we are given in order to meet professional industry standards. Instead of continuing to ask for donations without stating specific needs, we felt that providing a list would be helpful to our parents who are looking to financially support the school.

This document will be updated regularly. Please reach out to Mr. Popat with any questions. Donations can be made through the following link:
